ChatGPT Search and Deep Research can both use current information from the web, but they are designed for very different jobs. Search is the quicker option when you need a recent fact, a source, or a short answer. Deep Research is meant for questions that require several sources, a research plan, and a structured report.
The simple rule is: use Search when you need to find something, and use Deep Research when you need to investigate something. Choosing the right mode can save time and also produce a more useful answer.

What ChatGPT Search does
ChatGPT Search adds live web results to an ordinary conversation. ChatGPT may search automatically when a question benefits from current information. You can also start it manually from the tools menu or, in supported interfaces, type a slash and choose Search.
A search-based answer may include citations next to individual claims. The Sources button opens the pages used for the response, making it easier to check the evidence yourself. This is useful for questions such as:

Depending on your account and enabled connections, it can also read relevant information from supported apps. OpenAI says these connections use read actions for research rather than writing back to the connected service.
You can review the proposed approach before the work begins, monitor progress and interrupt the process to change the focus or sources. The finished report can include a table of contents, inline citations, a sources section and a record of the research activity. This makes it more suitable when the reasoning trail matters as much as the final answer.
Deep Research is especially useful for questions such as:
- Compare five health-insurance policies using their current policy documents.
- Analyze India’s electric-vehicle incentives across several states.
- Prepare a competitor report using company filings, product pages and market data.
- Review research papers and identify areas where their conclusions disagree.
- Evaluate several software tools against a detailed business requirement.
Availability and usage allowances depend on the plan and region. ChatGPT shows the remaining allowance inside the product, which is more reliable than relying on a fixed number that may change.
When ChatGPT Search is the better choice
Choose Search when the question is narrow, the answer is likely to be short, and freshness matters. It is also better for the first stage of an unfamiliar topic. A quick search can tell you whether a deeper investigation is justified.
For example, “Has the Reserve Bank of India changed this rule?” is a Search question. It needs a current answer and an official link. Asking Deep Research to build a long report would add delay without necessarily improving the result.

When Deep Research is worth the wait
Choose Deep Research when the question has several parts, sources may conflict, or you need a recommendation supported by evidence. It is also the stronger option when uploaded PDFs, spreadsheets or reports need to be considered alongside web sources.
Consider the difference between these two requests. “What is Delhi’s current electric-vehicle subsidy?” is a Search task. “Compare the current EV policies of Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, then recommend the best state for a charging-network expansion” is a Deep Research task. The second request needs several policy documents, common comparison criteria, and a defensible conclusion.
A useful Deep Research brief is:
Prepare a cited report for [audience] to support [decision]. Cover [scope] during [time period]. Compare sources using [criteria], prioritize [official sources], identify disagreements or missing evidence, and finish with recommendations, risks, and a source table.
How to get more reliable results from either mode
- Define the decision. Explain what you will do with the answer instead of requesting “everything” about a topic.
- Set the time range. State whether you need today’s information, the last year or a historical overview.
- Name preferred sources. Ask for regulators, company documentation, research papers or official statistics where appropriate.
- Separate facts from judgment. Request a clear distinction between documented evidence, estimates and the assistant’s interpretation.
- Open the citations. Confirm that the source exists, supports the claim and is current enough for your purpose.
Neither mode guarantees accuracy. ChatGPT can still misunderstand a source, cite a page that only partly supports a claim or make an incorrect inference. Privacy and connected sources
OpenAI says the same ChatGPT data controls apply to Deep Research conversations. Review those controls before uploading confidential files or connecting work accounts. Only provide material you are authorized to use, and remove personal or commercially sensitive details that are unnecessary for the task.
For location-based Search results, OpenAI says a general location inferred from the IP address may be used and shared with search providers, but not the IP address itself or ChatGPT account information. Users should still inspect the relevant privacy settings and company policies before using either tool for sensitive work.
Verdict: Which one should you use?
ChatGPT Search should be the default for most everyday questions. It is faster, widely available, and usually sufficient for current facts, recent news, and finding authoritative pages. Deep Research earns its longer runtime when a question requires multiple sources, uploaded material, careful comparison, and a report that another person can audit.
If you are unsure, begin with Search. Move to Deep Research when the first answer reveals conflicting evidence, too many variables, or a decision that deserves a documented investigation.
