Honor 8X vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Comparison – How do they differ?

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is the undisputed mid-range King for the first half of 2018. It has a great battery life, powerful SOC with good cameras, which have improved from the predecessor, the Redmi Note 4. Honor has been giving Xiaomi‘s Note series a tough fight for the past few years, and now, the company has launched their new smartphone today, the Honor 8X. As a successor to the Honor 7X, the 8X keeps everything that users liked in the outgoing model, while adding few key features to the new smartphone. So, are there any similarities or dissimilarities between the two? How do they compare? Let us find out through a quick spec comparison.

Design and Display

Regarding design, the Honor 8X has a flat slab design with rounded corners, whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a curved back design. The Honor 8X is made out of glass sandwich, while the Redmi Note 5 Pro uses a metal backplate. The Dual tone colored backs of the Honor 8X looks way better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s subtle metallic matte finish.

The Honor 8X has a large 6.5-inch Full HD+ display with a notch on top, that results in a resolution of 1080×2340 pixels and a19.5:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a smaller 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with a resolution of 1080×2160 pixels and a standard 18:9 aspect ratio. Both the phones use an IPS LCD panel.

Processor, RAM & Storage

The flashy new HiSilicon Kirin 710 SOC with Mali-G51 MP4 GPU, while the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with a Snapdragon 636 SOC with Adreno 509 GPU for the graphics. The Kirin 710 on the 8X replaces the Kirin 659 SOC that was used in the Honor 7X.

Although the RAM variants remain the same across both the phones with either 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM to choose from, the storage variants vary. While the Honor 8X comes with 64 GB storage for the 4 GB RAM variant, the 6 GB RAM variant offers 128 GB of internal storage. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, offers only 64 GB of internal storage across both the RAM variants. The Honor 8X has an added advantage with the dedicated microSD card slot, which lets you use both the SIM cards and the microSD card at the simultaneously, while you do have to choose between a secondary SIM or a microSD card slot, if you pick up the Redmi Note 5 Pro, which has a hybrid SIM/microSD slot.

Cameras

For imaging, both the phones come with dual camera setup on the back. The Honor 8X comes with a 20 MP primary camera with a f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 2 MP camera for capturing depth informartion for portraits. On the front, the notch houses a 16 MP selfie camera with a f/2.0 aperture.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro on the other hand comes with a 12 MP primary camera with a f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 5 MP f/2.0 camera for depth sensing. To the front, the phone comes with a 20 MP selfie camera with a f/2.2 aperture.

Battery

The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a massive 4000 mAh battery, which supports fast charging, while the Honor 8X features a slightly smaller 3750 mAh battery, with no support for fast charging. Although the Note 5 Pro comes with fast charging support, Xiaomi doesn’t bundle a fast charger with the smartphone inside the box.

OS & Interface

Both the phones run on Android 8.1 Oreo with their respective UI’s on top. The Honor 8X comes with Huawei’s EMUI 8.2, and the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with MIUI 9.6 on top. Both the UIs are heavily customized and offer many features that wouldn’t be available on stock android. However, Android Purists might hate the interface, as both the UIs have an iOS-esque look, with the lack of an app drawer. Sure, you can add the app drawer on the Honor 8X, but the UI is far from being called clean.

Pricing

The Honor 8X goes for INR 14,999 for the 4 GB RAM with 64 GB storage variant, INR 16,999 for the 6 GB RAM with 64 GB storage variant and 18,999 for the 6 GB RAM with 128 GB storage variant, whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro is available for INR 14,999 for the 4 GB RAM 64 GB storage variant and INR 16,999 for the 6 GB RAM, 64 GB internal storage variant.
