Moto E 2nd Gen Review

Moto E 2014 vs Moto E 2015 2nd gen Specs & Price Info

Motorola’s Moto E 2nd gen is launched and this should now make decision making harder because the pricing set for 3G variant of Moto E 2015 is not much different from the first gen. Moto E. While we would say that the 4G LTE variant of Moto E is the best you might see when we talk of Moto E in particular, the pricing is quite different.

Bigger display, better processor, better connectivity and the newer OS out of the box defines the new Moto E. But does that call it enough for a worthy upgrade? lets find out.

Moto E 1st gen vs Moto E 2nd gen comparison

Moto E 2nd Gen Review

Design and Display

The display size has changed a bit, as the Moto E 2nd gen comes with a 4.5-inch display while the previous Moto E had a 4.3-inch display. But the resolution is still the same – a qHD one with 960 x 540 pixels. The color output seems to be the same, and both the phones have the same Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Processor, RAM & Storage

While the last years’ Moto E had come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, a dual-core one clocking at 1.2 GHz, the new phone, i.e. Moto E 2015 comes with two different variants with two processors.
The 3G variant of Moto E 2nd gen has a quad-core Snapdragon 200, while the 4G variant has the quad-core Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor.

Both the phones have the same 1GB RAM, while on storage, the 4GB storage from Moto E 2014 is increased to 8GB internal in the 2015 one, and there is still the same MicroSD card slot for the expansion of storage.

Operating System

No big worry for the Moto E 1st gen users here because although the phone is still on Android 4.4.4 KitKat, any time now we would see the official Android 5.0 Lollipop update available for it. On the other side, the Moto E 2nd gen comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and we will see more software update in the future as well. Some extra features of Moto G and Moto X are going to be seen in the newer Moto E.

Camera

The camera is such where Motorola has brought no improvements or upgrades, because the phone still has the same 5-megapixel camera with no LED flash support, and on the front too there is just the same VGA camera. The only difference we notice is the possibility of focusing by touch, and that was not possible in the original Moto E.

Connectivity

The Moto E 2014 supported 3G connectivity but the new Moto E has two variants, and thus you see one with 3G and the other one is with 4G LTE connectivity, thus the budget device users have now got an option from Motorola in the budget range to get a phone with 4G connectivity. Other options are quite the same.

Battery

The battery in Moto E was 1980 mAh, but Motorola has pumped that up to 2390 mAh which is a very good capacity for a phone with qHD display and 4.5-inch screen size. That capacity seems much better not just with capacity but that was needed for the LTE connectivity.

Final conclusion – Moto E 2014 vs Moto E 2015

While the Moto E is still priced cheaper than its successor, we feel the new Moto E deserves a buy because of the better connectivity, a better battery and we are sure even the next big Android version will be well supported by the Moto E 2nd gen.
