Sony is one smartphone company which does not believe in releasing successor phones annually, it seems to be following a half-yearly cycle which can be seen with the M series as well. The Xperia M4 Aqua was launched earlier this year and its successor the Xperia M5 was launched recently on August 3rd.
There are a lot of upgrades in Xperia M5 in comparison to the Xperia M4 Aqua, which we will be comparing in detail. The pricing of the Xperia M5 is not yet announced, Sony has mentioned that it will be a mid-range device, and with the specifications which are announced, it is going to be a nightmare for the competitors if launched at a competitive price.

The Xperia M5 goes with the flagship Z series design which was also followed by Xperia M4 Aqua. It follows the footsteps on its predecessor and comes with IP65 and IP68 rated features which support capless Micro-USB ports. The Xperia M5 will be available in black, white and gold colors and the Xperia M4 is available in black, white and coral colors. The Xperia M5 is slightly smaller but is thicker measuring at 7.6mm in comparison to 7.3mm to the Xperia M4 and heavier than its predecessor.
The display has been upgraded to fullHD 1920 x 1080 pixels display in Xperia M5 in comparison to the HD 1280 x 720 pixels resolution display in Xperia M4 Aqua. The Pixel density is also increased substantially from 294ppi in the M4 Aqua to 440 PPI in M5 which looks a lot crisper, there is no increase in the size of the display. The display of the M4 Aqua had dull colors and whites were a little dim, these will be fixed in the Xperia M5 looking at the increased resolution and increased pixel density with the same display size.
Processor and RAM:
Sony has made a jump from Snapdragon to Mediatek and is offering a Octa-core Mediatek 64-bit processor in comparison to the Snapdragon 615 quad-core processor. There is an increase in the clocking speed as well with the Xperia M5 with 2GHz compared to the 1.5GHz found in the M4 Aqua.
The RAM has also been increased from 2GB to 3GB which will be useful in supporting the octa-core processor in handling multiple functions simultaneously, better than the M4 Aqua. In terms of storage, the M5 comes with 16GB internal memory and the M4 Aqua used to come with 8GB of internal storage. Both the devices have the option of expansion with microSD card, M4 Aqua to 128GB and the M5 to 200GB.
This is one of the segments in which there is major improvement in the M5 compared to M4 Aqua. With a 21.5MP rear camera which is a decent upgrade from the 13MP camera in the M4 Aqua, the front camera also has been upgraded to a 13MP shooter in comparison the 5MP camera in the earlier model.
The M5 is capable of 5x clear image zoom in comparison to the 4x digital zoom in M4 Aqua, it is also capable 4K video recording with the 21.5mp rear camera with auto scene recognition feature which was absent in the M4, the M4 Aqua was restricted to recording 1080p videos only. From the front camera the M5 is capable of recording 1080p videos when compared to the 720p video recording option in the M4 Aqua. Looking at the improved camera in the M5 it is going to be the major strong point of this device, which was one of the major let down in the M4 Aqua.
Battery and OS:
The battery capacity of M5 is slightly improved with a 26000 mAh battery from the 2400 mAh battery in the M4 Aqua. The operating system in both the devices is similar with Android Lollipop software. There is not much difference and will come with Walkman and entertainment apps along with the Xperia Lounge app. Sony is sticking with the same design and interface as the earlier M series smartphones.
There are a lot of considerable improvements which can be seen internally but from the external design aspect both the devices look similar. There is just slight increase in thickness and slightly heavier than its predecessor but comes packed with a much better display, improved processor, increased RAM, and a bigger battery.
Not to forget the main feature which is the Camera, the M5 comes with a 21.5 MP camera which is seen in Flagship devices and the same being offered in a mid-range phone by Sony is a big improvement. The only thing which is to look out for is the price which is yet to be announced, if the price is similar to the M4 Aqua then the M5 is a sure shot winner between both the devices, and you can go for it without any second thoughts.
