Reliance Jio DTH Box vs Timvision Android TV Decoder

Jio DTH Box could be TIMvision’s digital Android TV decoder

As we had exclusively reported yesterday that Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. is working on the Jio DTH service and we leaked a couple of pictures of the same. Now, there were doubts whether it really is a set-top-box or is it a console or a decoder. While the fact still remains that we are looking at something unofficial, there is a close resemblance to a device that was launched in Italy last year.

Timvision from Italy had launched the hybrid set-top-box. The Internet video on demand service had made this Android TV decoder, which combines digital terrestrial reception (DVB-T2) reception with access to online services, which is what we are expecting to see through the Jio ecosystem, especially JioFiber.

The set-top-box looks quite similar to Google Home but is only smaller, and it looks quite similar to the Jio DTH box that we had spotted. If it goes on to be the same one, here are some of the specifications and details of the STB that you are looking at.

  • Based on Android TV platform
  • Access to Google Play Store
  • Quad-core Marvell ARM CPU, 2GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage
  • Digital terrestrial DVB-T2 (single tuner);
  • Video: HDMI 2.0 output (HDCP 2.2);
  • Audio: SPDIF output (optical);
  • WiFi: Dual Band 802.11 ac;
  • Connections: Bluetooth 4.1 module, USB 3.0 port, Ethernet 100 BT

Whether there will be a support for 4K content, we don’t know yet. Even the remote control looks very much similar with minimal changes to the buttons and the indication on them. There is one easily noticeable difference in the box itself, with one of the connectivity ports missing in the Jio’s leaked DTH box, but it could be that there was no need of it in India.

If our sources are right, Jio will be introducing the DTH service right after the JioFiber broadband goes official. There are a lot of speculations and we are yet to know about the offerings in the DTH service and the channels, pricing and such information.

Disclaimer: As mentioned in the title, this is something not confirmed or found through any source, but we just dug a bit too deep into things to find some information related to the Jio DTH set top box that we had shared yesterday.

  1. Anyhow, if it’s true, then is a great news! 🙂
    Good specs, but I don’t understand, why is that port not required in India, it could be useful I guess..
