Sony has announced their latest offerings by launching two new devices the Sony XperiaM5 (Single SIM) and Xperia M5 Dual (Dual SIM) along with one other device Xperia C5 Ultra. We had earlier posted about the leak where the design and the specifications of the device were leaked. One of the main features making the Xperia M5 apart in the category which it is placed in is the Camera and the Water resistance feature.
The Xperia M5 is being called the “class mid-range smartphone” because of its specs and will surely give good competition to other smart phones in this category. Let us talk about the features of the Xperia M5, it comes with a 5-inch (1080 x 1920 pixels) resolution IPS Display. The design of the device is maintained similar to all Sony mobiles which I feel, is good enough for a mid range phone and as the design is working well why change it. It has dimensions of 145 x 72 x 7.6 mm and weighs in at 142.5 grams.
The Xperia M5 is powered by a MediaTek Helio X10 chipset along with 2GHz octa-core processor and IMG Rouge G6200 GPU, it is supported by 3GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage which can be expanded with microSD card. It is a decent processor for a mid range device and the 3GB RAM is also good enough to support the chipset in giving decent performance. The device runs on a 2600mAh battery.
Coming to one of the key features of the Xperia M5, it is equipped with a 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor with 0.25-second “Hybrid Autofocus” which is said to utilise Phase detection AF(PDAF) which will improve the speed of focussing to capture good moving images as well and also helps in faster shutter speed response and Contrast detection AF to help improve the precision of Focus.
The sensor used in Xperia M5 is mostly going to be the Sony IMX230 sensor which is yet to be announced by Sony. It has a f/2.2 aperture speed and comes with 5x image zoom. You can record 4K videos along with other features like auto scene recognition, image stabilizer and geotagging are available.
The Xperia M5 similar to the Xperia C3 which is a selfie focussed smart phone comes with a 13MP front facing camera with Exmor RS sensor to capture great selfies. The Xperia C5 Ultra also sports a 13MP front facing camera similarly. Xperia M5 comes with IP65/IP68 certification for dust and water resistant and not water proof there is a lot of difference between the two terms which is similar to the Xperia Z3 which had the same rating.
Sony has clearly mentioned that you should avoid taking your “Water Resistant” phones in Salt/chlorinated water that rules out the devices from being used by divers or swimming pools. It means that your device will be safe and you can use your device in shower or when you spill some water on to it, but not submerge your device into swimming pools and aquariums.
The Xperia M5 will be available in three colors Black, white and Gold and the availability of the device is restricted to selected countries across emerging markets from mid-August 2015. The pricing of the Xperia M5 is not yet announced.
