ChatGPT offers several controls that sound similar but perform very different jobs. Temporary Chat, deleting a conversation, archiving it, disabling Memory, and turning off model training are not interchangeable privacy settings.
Choosing the wrong control can leave a conversation stored when you only hid it, remove a chat you intended to keep or allow an old saved memory to continue influencing future answers. This comparison explains what each option changes.
Temporary Chat, delete, archive and training controls compared
| Option | Appears in history? | Uses or creates Memory? | Used to improve models? | What happens to the conversation? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary Chat | No | No | No | OpenAI says it is automatically deleted from its systems within 30 days |
| Delete a chat | Removed immediately | May not delete a separately saved memory | Depends on settings and whether data was already de-identified | Scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions |
| Archive a chat | Hidden from the main sidebar | Can remain available as retained account data | Does not change the training setting | Stored until you delete it |
| Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” | Yes | Memory remains a separate setting | New eligible conversations are not used for training | Chats remain available in history |
| Turn off Memory | Yes | Stops the disabled memory source from being used | Does not itself change training controls | Does not delete past chats or necessarily erase existing memories |
What is Temporary Chat?
Temporary Chat is intended for conversations that should not appear in normal history or affect later personalization. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not create memories, do not use existing memories, and are not used to train its models.
They are not deleted instantly. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary Chat follows the same usage policies as other conversations, so it should not be considered anonymous or suitable for passwords and highly sensitive secrets.
Files uploaded in Temporary Chat are not saved to the account or ChatGPT Library. This differs from normal conversations, where files may be stored separately from the chat when Library is available.
When should you use Temporary Chat?
Temporary Chat is appropriate when you want to:
- Ask a one-off question that should not personalize later replies.
- Test a prompt without cluttering normal history.
- Discuss a surprise gift, temporary travel plan or other short-lived context.
- Upload a non-sensitive working file without saving it to Library.
It does not replace redaction. Remove unnecessary names, account numbers, medical details, and confidential business information before sharing a document with any online AI service.
What happens when you delete a ChatGPT conversation?
Deleting removes the chat from your account view immediately. OpenAI says it is then scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from the account or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations.
A deleted chat cannot be recovered through the ChatGPT interface or support. Check the title and contents carefully before confirming.
Deleting a conversation may not delete files separately saved to ChatGPT Library. Chats and Library files can have separate controls, so manage the file in Library as well when you want both removed.
Does deleting a chat remove saved memories?
Not automatically. OpenAI stores saved memories separately from conversation history. If a chat caused ChatGPT to remember a preference, deleting only that conversation can leave the saved memory available for future responses.
To fully remove the detail, delete it under Settings > Personalization > Memory and delete the chat where it was shared. Review Custom Instructions, connected apps, and saved files if the same information exists there too.
What does archiving a chat do?
Archiving is organization, not deletion. It removes a conversation from the main sidebar but retains it in the account. Archived chats follow the same retention rules as unarchived chats and remain searchable.
To find them, open Settings > Data Controls and manage Archived Chats. From there, you can unarchive a conversation or delete it.
Archive chats you may need later; delete chats you no longer want retained. Do not archive something merely because you expect it to be erased.
How to keep chat history but disable model training
On a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says chats will continue appearing in your history, but new conversations will not be used to improve its models.
The setting syncs across web and mobile for the account. If you deliberately submit feedback on a response, OpenAI notes that the associated conversation may still be used to improve models.
Business offerings have different defaults: OpenAI states that content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and the API is not used for training by default unless the organization explicitly opts in.
Does turning off training disable Memory?
No. Training controls determine whether eligible content may be used to improve models; Memory controls personalization of your own future conversations. You can keep chat history and Memory while opting out of training, or turn Memory off while leaving the training setting enabled.
For a conversation that should neither use Memory nor appear in history, start a Temporary Chat before entering the prompt.
Which option should you choose?
- Use Temporary Chat for a new one-off conversation that should not enter history or Memory.
- Delete an existing conversation you no longer want stored under normal retention.
- Archive a useful conversation you want to hide from the sidebar but keep.
- Disable model training when you want to retain normal chat history without allowing new eligible conversations to improve models.
- Disable or manage Memory when you do not want previous information personalizing future replies.
The bottom line
Temporary Chat is the cleanest option for a new conversation that should not use Memory or remain in normal history. Deleting applies to an existing chat, while archiving merely hides it. Disabling model training lets you retain history, and disabling Memory controls personalization rather than data retention. For complete removal, check the conversation, saved memories and Library files separately.
