WhatsApp messages appear only when you open the app? Try these Android fixes

If WhatsApp messages appear only when you open the app on Android, start with notification permissions, background data and battery restrictions. First establish whether messages arrive silently or are delayed altogether. Then change one setting at a time and test with the screen locked. Reinstalling WhatsApp should not be the first step.

This guide covers Android phones, with extra checks for Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer; use Settings search if a label below is different on your phone.

Is WhatsApp delivery delayed, or is the alert missing?

Ask someone to send you a new message while your phone is connected to the internet and locked. Leave WhatsApp in the background rather than force-stopping it. Wait a few minutes, look in the notification shade, and only then open the app.

  • A notification is already in the shade, but there was no sound or banner: start with notification categories, muted chats and Do Not Disturb.
  • Nothing appears until WhatsApp opens: background connectivity or push notification restrictions deserve attention.
  • Messages also fail while WhatsApp is open: test the internet connection first.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of a particular fault. WhatsApp’s notification troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies messages appearing only after opening the app as a push notification problem.

1. Allow notifications in Android and WhatsApp

Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > WhatsApp, or open WhatsApp’s App info page and select Notifications. Enable notifications, then check message and group categories if your phone exposes them. An enabled master switch does not necessarily mean every category is allowed to sound.

Also look at lock-screen visibility and any active Do Not Disturb or bedtime mode. A hidden preview protects message contents; it does not necessarily mean delivery has failed. Google’s Android notification guide explains the difference between silent and alerting notifications.

Inside WhatsApp, check Settings > Notifications and whether the affected conversation is muted. If only one conversation is affected, compare it with an unmuted chat before changing phone-wide settings. WhatsApp notes that device notification settings override its own settings.

2. Check background data and Data Saver

If the problem happens on mobile data but disappears on Wi-Fi, inspect the app’s data access. Open WhatsApp’s App info page and look for Mobile data & Wi-Fi, Mobile data or Data usage. Allow background data if your phone provides that switch.

On Pixel-style Android, open Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver > Unrestricted data and allow WhatsApp if you want it to receive background mobile data while Data Saver is enabled. Google’s Data Saver guidance explains that most background mobile data is otherwise restricted. This exception can increase data usage; you do not need to exempt every app.

3. Review battery restrictions for WhatsApp

Open Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > App battery usage, or the equivalent Battery section. Check whether background use is blocked. On supported Pixel versions, look for Allow background usage. Labels and available options differ between devices.

Temporarily turn off Battery Saver and repeat the locked-screen message test. If that changes the result, review WhatsApp’s app-specific battery settings rather than disabling battery controls for the entire phone. Google explains that battery optimisation can delay notifications, and that allowing more background activity can increase power consumption. Restore your preferred settings if the test makes no difference.

4. On Samsung Galaxy, check sleeping apps

Open Settings > Battery or Battery and device care > Battery > Background usage limits. Look in Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps. Remove WhatsApp if it is listed; consider adding it to Never sleeping apps if that option is available and you need dependable background alerts.

Samsung explains that deep-sleeping apps cannot perform background notification activity. Its battery guidance also notes the extra power use associated with never-sleeping exceptions. Repeat the same test after making the change.

5. Isolate the network and update the app

Try the test separately on a known-working Wi-Fi connection and on mobile data. Open a webpage to check basic internet access. If the issue follows one network, record that result before changing more app settings. If you personally use a VPN, briefly compare with it disconnected on a trusted connection; do not bypass a workplace’s required network controls.

Update WhatsApp through Google Play, restart the phone, open WhatsApp once, then test again. WhatsApp’s sending and receiving guidance recommends connection checks and restarting for messaging problems.

How to confirm the fix

Test an individual message and a group message with the screen locked, on the connection you normally use. Note whether the alert appears without opening WhatsApp. Repeat after the phone has been idle for longer; an immediate successful test alone may miss an idle-related restriction.

If delays continue, record your phone model, Android version, WhatsApp version, network and the settings that changed the result. Share those details with WhatsApp support through the app’s Help section. Avoid clearing app storage or uninstalling simply to fix notifications without first checking your chat backup and restore access.
