ChatGPT Voice Not Working? Fix Microphone, Audio and Connection Problems

Phone and laptop showing a voice interface and microphone permission warning

When ChatGPT Voice does not work, the cause is usually one of five things: microphone permission, the wrong audio device, an outdated app, an unstable connection or a feature restriction on the account. The Voice button may also be missing because of the interface, plan, region, workspace or parental settings.

Use the steps below in order. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling the app before checking basic permissions and the service status.

How ChatGPT Voice normally starts

On iPhone or Android, open ChatGPT and select the Voice icon in the message bar. Allow microphone access if your phone asks. On the web, select the Voice icon in the prompt window and approve the browser’s microphone request.

ChatGPT Voice lets you speak and hear a spoken response in the same conversation. Dictation is different: it turns one recording into text that you can edit before sending.

Quick fixes when ChatGPT Voice is not working

  1. Check that the microphone is not muted inside the Voice screen.
  2. Confirm microphone permission for ChatGPT or your browser.
  3. Disconnect unwanted Bluetooth earphones or speakers.
  4. Increase media volume, not only ringtone volume.
  5. Close and reopen ChatGPT.
  6. Update the app or try chatgpt.com in another browser.
  7. Disable a VPN or proxy and change networks.
  8. Check the OpenAI status page.

The ChatGPT Voice button is missing

Update the app

Install the latest official ChatGPT update from the App Store or Google Play. Fully close the app after updating and open it again.

Check the web interface

Open chatgpt.com in a current browser. If Voice appears on the web but not the phone, the problem is likely app-specific.

Check the account and workspace

Voice availability can depend on the plan, region, app version, workspace settings and parental controls. A company or school administrator may disable Voice. Make sure you are in the intended personal or work workspace.

Sign out and back in

If other account features are also missing, sign out and log in using the same authentication method you originally chose.

Fix microphone permission on Android

  1. Open Android Settings.
  2. Go to Apps and select ChatGPT.
  3. Open Permissions.
  4. Select Microphone.
  5. Choose Allow while using the app.
  6. Return to ChatGPT and start a new Voice conversation.

Menu wording differs between phone brands. Also check Android’s system-wide microphone access toggle in Quick Settings or Privacy settings.

Fix microphone permission on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll to Apps and select ChatGPT, or open Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  3. Enable microphone access for ChatGPT.
  4. Force-close ChatGPT and reopen it.

If the microphone option never appears, start Voice once to trigger the permission request. Screen Time or a managed-device policy may block changes.

Fix microphone permission in Chrome, Edge or Safari

Select the site controls beside the address bar and allow Microphone for chatgpt.com. Reload the page after changing the permission. If the browser has several microphones, choose the correct input device in its site or system settings.

On macOS, also open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and enable access for the browser. On Windows, check Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and allow desktop apps to use it.

ChatGPT cannot hear you

  • Check whether another app such as Zoom is using the microphone.
  • Remove a thick phone case blocking the microphone opening.
  • Test the microphone in the phone’s recorder app.
  • Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth devices.
  • Speak after Voice has fully connected.
  • Check that the in-call microphone button is not muted.

If the recorder app also produces silence or distortion, the problem is probably with the device or operating-system permission rather than ChatGPT.

You can speak, but there is no sound

Raise the media volume while ChatGPT is speaking. Then check whether sound is being routed to Bluetooth earphones, a car system, an external monitor or another speaker.

On a computer, select the correct output device from the operating system’s sound menu. Test another website or audio file to confirm the speaker works.

ChatGPT Voice uses the wrong language

Open ChatGPT Settings → Voice → Language and choose the language you speak most often. You can also tell ChatGPT which language to use at the beginning of the conversation.

Reduce background noise, move closer to the microphone and avoid switching languages several times in one sentence while diagnosing the problem. Accents are supported, but manually selecting the correct language can improve recognition.

Voice keeps disconnecting or says connecting

Real-time audio needs a stable connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, disable a VPN or proxy, and avoid a weak public network. On a managed office or college connection, filtering may interfere with the real-time session.

If text chat also fails, the issue is not limited to Voice. Follow our ChatGPT network error troubleshooting guide.

Voice stops while the phone is locked

Enable Background conversations under ChatGPT Settings → Voice if the option is available. A background Voice conversation can still end if you force-close the app, reach a usage limit or the session reaches its maximum length.

Battery saver, aggressive background-app management and microphone privacy indicators can also interrupt the session on some phones.

Video or screen sharing is missing

Voice modes do not all provide the same capabilities. Current OpenAI guidance says some real-time Voice experiences do not support video or screen sharing, while eligible mobile users may find those controls in another Voice option. Availability also depends on the account.

Do not assume a missing camera button means the microphone feature is broken.

You may have reached a Voice usage limit

Voice allowances differ by plan and can change. ChatGPT should notify you when a limit is reached. Wait for the rolling allowance to reset or use ordinary text chat. Check the current plan information rather than relying on an old screenshot.

ChatGPT Voice gives inaccurate answers

Voice makes conversation more natural, but it does not make every answer correct. Mention the exact date, time zone or location for time-sensitive questions. Verify important claims using reliable sources. Our guide on making ChatGPT fact-check answers can help.

What to collect before contacting support

  • Phone or computer model
  • Operating system and ChatGPT app version
  • Whether text chat works
  • Whether Voice works on another network
  • The exact error message
  • Approximate time and time zone
  • Whether a VPN, proxy or managed workspace is involved

Never send a password or one-time login code to anyone claiming to provide support.

Frequently asked questions

Why does dictation work while Voice does not?

Dictation records one message for transcription, while Voice creates a real-time spoken conversation. A connection, plan or Voice-specific issue can affect one without affecting the other.

Why is ChatGPT Voice silent with Bluetooth connected?

The sound may be routed to the Bluetooth device while its microphone is unavailable or muted. Disconnect it temporarily and test the phone’s built-in microphone and speaker.

Can ChatGPT Voice continue in the background?

Does ChatGPT Memory work with Voice?

It can in supported Voice experiences when memory is available and enabled. Review what ChatGPT remembers using our ChatGPT Memory guide.

Final takeaway

Start with microphone permission, audio routing and the network. Then update the app, check the account or workspace and confirm that you have not reached a usage limit. OpenAI’s official ChatGPT Voice guide contains the latest availability and controls.
