Buying a smart bulb or plug used to be simple: check whether it worked with your preferred app and put it in the cart. Today, shoppers also see Matter, Zigbee, Thread and Wi-Fi on the box. These labels are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one can leave you with extra hubs, unreliable automations or devices trapped in separate apps.
The short answer is that Matter is the best starting point for a new multi-brand smart home, Zigbee remains excellent for a large network of low-power sensors and lights, while Wi-Fi is convenient for a few mains-powered devices. However, the best system can combine all three. Here is what each standard actually does and how to choose without buying the same hardware twice.
Matter, Zigbee and Wi-Fi are not the same kind of technology
The most important distinction is that Matter is an application-layer interoperability standard, not a wireless radio. A Matter device communicates over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet, while Bluetooth Low Energy is commonly used during setup. Matter defines a common language so that certified products can work across compatible ecosystems.
Thread is the low-power, IP-based mesh network often used by battery-powered Matter sensors, locks and similar accessories. A Thread-based Matter device needs access to a Thread border router. That border router may already be built into a compatible smart speaker, display or router, but shoppers should verify the exact model rather than assume.
Zigbee is a complete low-power mesh solution with its own networking and application layers. Most home Zigbee setups use a coordinator or bridge, commonly called a hub, which connects the Zigbee mesh to an app or wider home network. Wi-Fi, meanwhile, is the familiar IP network supplied by your router. Many Wi-Fi smart devices connect directly to it and rely on the manufacturerâs app or cloud service.

Why choose Matter?
Matterâs strongest benefit is choice. A certified accessory can be commissioned into compatible ecosystems without every manufacturer inventing a separate integration. Matter also supports multi-admin, which is designed to let the same device be controlled from more than one ecosystem. That is useful in homes where family members use different phones or voice assistants.
It can also reduce dependence on a manufacturerâs cloud for core controls because Matter is designed around local IP connectivity. That does not mean every advanced feature is universal or that every companion app becomes unnecessary. A camera, robot vacuum or appliance may expose basic functions through Matter but keep specialist controls in its own app.
The current Matter 1.6 specification adds setup and multi-ecosystem improvements, but a new specification does not instantly upgrade every product. Certification, device firmware and controller support all have to catch up. Buy for the features available today, not only for a version number printed in marketing material.
Category winner for interoperability: Matter. It is the clearest choice when starting a new smart home and avoiding a single-vendor lock-in is a priority.
Why Zigbee still makes sense
Zigbee is mature, efficient and particularly strong when you want dozens of low-bandwidth accessories. Mains-powered Zigbee devices can relay messages through the mesh, helping coverage as the network grows. Battery sensors can sleep for long periods, which suits door contacts, motion sensors, buttons and temperature monitors.
The trade-off is the coordinator. A Zigbee badge alone does not guarantee that every feature will appear in every hub. Device handlers, vendor-specific features and ecosystem certification still matter. The newer Zigbee 4.0 standard adds improvements including Zigbee Direct commissioning and control using Bluetooth Low Energy, but existing consumer products and hubs will continue to vary.
Zigbee is especially sensible if you already own a reliable bridge and compatible devices. Replacing a stable Zigbee network merely to make every box say Matter is unlikely to deliver enough benefit. Some Matter bridges can also expose supported Zigbee devices to Matter ecosystems, allowing a gradual migration rather than a complete rebuild.
Category winner for dense low-power networks: Zigbee. It remains a practical option for lights, sensors and buttons when you are comfortable managing a hub.
When Wi-Fi is the easiest option
A Wi-Fi plug, bulb or camera can be appealing because it normally connects to the router you already own. For one or two devices, that is often the cheapest and easiest route. Wi-Fi also provides the bandwidth needed for cameras and video doorbells; Thread and Zigbee are designed for smaller control and sensor messages, not video streaming.
Problems become more visible as the installation grows. Cheap routers may struggle with many clients, 2.4GHz congestion can affect reliability, and dozens of vendor-specific apps become difficult to manage. Some products also need an internet connection for normal operation. The exact behaviour depends on the manufacturer, so check whether schedules, automations and manual control continue when broadband is unavailable.
Category winner for cameras and a few standalone devices: Wi-Fi. It is convenient, but buying 40 unrelated cloud-dependent Wi-Fi accessories is rarely the cleanest long-term system.
What hardware do you actually need?
- Matter over Wi-Fi: a compatible Matter controller and your Wi-Fi router.
- Matter over Thread: a Matter controller plus a compatible Thread border router. One device can sometimes perform both jobs.
- Zigbee: a compatible Zigbee coordinator or bridge, unless the product and phone support a newer direct-control method.
- Ordinary Wi-Fi accessory: the router and the manufacturerâs app, plus any ecosystem integration you want.
Do not treat âhub-freeâ as automatically better. A dedicated hub can keep low-power devices off the Wi-Fi network and give automations a consistent local coordinator. Equally, do not buy another hub before checking whether your existing smart speaker, display or router already contains the required controller, bridge or Thread border-router function.

- Decide which phone apps and voice ecosystems the household will use.
- Check the exact product model in the relevant certification or compatibility list.
- For Matter, confirm whether the device uses Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet.
- For Matter over Thread, verify that you own a compatible border router.
- For Zigbee, confirm the exact hub supports the device and its advanced features.
- Check whether core controls and automations work locally when the internet is down.
- Review the manufacturerâs update policy and account-security options.
- For cameras, confirm storage fees and privacy controls before focusing on the protocol logo.
Matter vs Zigbee vs Wi-Fi: Which should you buy?
Choose Matter for a new, multi-brand installation, especially when other household members use different ecosystems. Prefer Matter over Thread for low-power sensors and locks, and Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet for devices that need more bandwidth or permanent power.
Choose Zigbee when you already have a dependable hub or plan a large network of compatible lights, switches and sensors. Its efficiency and mature mesh remain valuable, and a suitable Matter bridge can provide a path into newer ecosystems.
Choose conventional Wi-Fi devices for cameras, video doorbells and a small number of plugs or appliances where direct setup is more important than building a large unified network. Look for local control and a credible update record.
The most practical home is often hybrid: Matter provides the shared control layer, Thread or Zigbee handles low-power accessories, and Wi-Fi carries video and high-bandwidth devices. The logo matters, but reliable hardware, available features, software support and sensible network design matter more.
