OPPO is known for offering selfie-centric smartphones through its F-series line-up. Last year’s OPPO F5 certainly did level-up the selfie game with its 20 MP selfie shooter, but OPPO plans to challenge itself with this year’s OPPO F7 that boasts a massive 25 MP selfie camera. Let’s see how much of a specs upgrade do you get with the new F7 over the F5.
Design and Display
In terms of design, the OPPO F5 and the OPPO F7 are poles apart, with the F5 sporting thin bezels on both, the top and the bottom, whereas the F7 takes a different route with the new iPhone-like notch on top and a thin chin at the bottom, that has become a trend now. The story remains the same on the back as well, while the OPPO F5 has a matte-finished metal on the back, the F7 goes for a glass sandwich style, with a metal frame underneath, which kind of makes it look a bit premium.
The last year’s F5 comes with a 6″ LTPS IPS LCD panel with 1080x2160p resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. The F7 comes with a 6.23″ LTPS IPS LCD display with a slightly higher resolution i.e, 1080x2280p, with a new 19:9 aspect ratio to make up for the area lost for the notch. The F7 has a slightly higher pixel density at 405PPI versus the 401PPI on the F5.
Processor, RAM and Storage
Based on Mediatek’s claims, the this year’s processor sees a huge improvement in terms of performance, with Helio P60 chipset underneath the OPPO F7 promising upto 70% increase when compared to the last year’s Helio P23 present in the OPPO F5. The graphic performance should also see an upgrade with a Mali-G72 MP3 GPU handling the graphic activities of the newer F7, over the yesteryear’s Mali-G71 MP3 GPU present inside the OPPO F5. Both phones do come with the same amount of RAM that is either in 4 GB/ 6 GB variants.
The OPPO F5 comes in 32/ 64 GB storage variants while the Oppo F7 comes with 64 GB storage as the base variant, and also has a 128 GB variant as well. Both the phones come with a dedicated MicroSD card slot, using which the storage can be expanded upto an extra 256 GB.
The OPPO F5 and the OPPO f7 use the same 16 MP primary camera on the rear that has an aperture of F/1.8. Both the rear cameras on the two devices come with Phase Detection Autofocus technology. Both the phones can record videos at 1080p 30fps resolution through the rear cameras.
To the front, OPPO F5’s 20 MP f/2.0 selfie shooter was one of the most talked about feature last year, this year, OPPO has improved its selfie camera with a newer 25 MP sensor that’s AI powered, that sits behind an F/2.0 lens. The OPPO F7 comes with a plethora of AI Beauty Technology with 8 million beauty effects.
The battery on the OPPO F5 is a 3200 mAh non-removable one, and the OPPO F7 has slightly higher 3400 mAh battery that should last a bit longer, given the AI optimization and the 200 mAh higher capacity. The OPPO F7’s also has a non-removable battery.
OS & Interface
The last year’s Oppo F5 comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat whereas the newer F7 comes with Android 8.0 Oreo. Both phones run on OPPO’s custom UI interface Color OS, but the F5 runs on outdated Color OS 3.2 version, with the F7 running on Android 8.0 Oreo. Color OS is a heavily customised UI, that doesn’t look anywhere close to Vanilla Android.
The OPPO F5 was launched at a price of 19,990 for the 4 GB RAM/ 32 GB storage variant, while the 6 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage variant was priced 24,990, and still retails for the full price. The newly launched F7 would cost you 21,990 for the 4 GB RAM/ 64 GB internal storage Moonlight Silver, Solar Red variants while the Sunrise Red & Diamond Black phones are priced at 26,990 and come with 6 GB of RAM/ 128 GB of storage.
