Banks show a UPI PIN blocked message after repeated incorrect entries. The PIN belongs to a particular bank account, so changing from Google Pay to PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or another UPI app usually does not bypass the lock.
Quick answer: After three incorrect UPI PIN attempts within 24 hours, the bank may block payments for 24 hours. You can wait and use the correct PIN later, or use the app’s Forgot UPI PIN option to reset it. Google Pay’s official guidance says a reset can allow payments immediately.
What happens after a wrong UPI PIN?
One wrong entry simply fails the transaction. After two wrong attempts, some apps warn you to reset the PIN before the account is locked. After three incorrect attempts within 24 hours, the bank may temporarily block UPI payments from that account. However, the exact message can vary by bank and app.
Therefore, do not keep guessing. For clarity, a UPI PIN is different from your phone lock, app passcode, debit-card ATM PIN and OTP. If you are unsure, stop after the first or second failure.
How to reset a blocked UPI PIN
- Open the UPI app and go to Bank account or Payment methods.
- Select the bank account whose PIN is blocked.
- Choose Forgot UPI PIN or Reset UPI PIN.
- Complete the bank’s verification step. This may use debit-card details, or Aadhaar where the bank and app support Aadhaar-based onboarding.
- Enter the OTP only in the bank or UPI app’s secure flow.
- Create a new four- or six-digit UPI PIN and confirm it.
Meanwhile, remember that menu names differ between apps. If the reset option is missing or verification fails, contact the bank that holds the account.
Should you wait 24 hours or reset?
| Situation | Better option |
|---|---|
| You remember the correct PIN and payment is not urgent | Wait for the temporary lock to expire, then try once. |
| You forgot the PIN | Reset it instead of guessing. |
| You do not have the required card or Aadhaar verification | Contact the bank; do not use an unofficial workaround. |
| Only one app shows an error after a successful reset | Update and reopen the app, then check the bank account setup. |
Why a PIN reset may fail
- The debit-card number or expiry information does not match the selected account.
- The mobile number in the phone does not match the bank’s records.
- The SIM cannot send the verification SMS.
- The bank’s UPI service is temporarily unavailable.
- That bank may not support Aadhaar-based reset, or the Aadhaar-linked mobile number may not match.
In addition, wait before repeating verification attempts. Also, excessive SMS or OTP requests can create a separate temporary block.
Security warning
Most importantly, no bank, NPCI employee or app support agent needs to know your existing or new UPI PIN. Never type a PIN into a form opened from a chat link. Only enter a UPI PIN inside the trusted payment app or bank flow when you authorise an action.
Frequently asked questions
Is the same UPI PIN used in every app?
The bank links the PIN to the account, not one app. If the same account is linked elsewhere, its UPI PIN remains the same until you reset it.
Can I still receive money when my PIN is blocked?
You use a PIN to authorise outgoing transactions. As a result, a temporary sending block generally does not require you to enter a PIN to receive money.

Never share a UPI PIN, OTP, full debit-card number or screen-sharing access with a person offering to unblock payments.
