A UPI complaint is much easier to trace when you have the payment reference. Apps may label it UPI transaction ID, UPI reference ID, UTR, RRN or bank reference number. The label and length can differ, so copy the identifier shown on the specific transaction instead of guessing from an SMS.
Quick answer: Open the payment in your UPI app’s transaction history and expand its details. Save the reference number, amount, date, time, payer and payee UPI IDs, status and the bank account used. Report the transaction inside the app first, then contact the debited bank and use the official NPCI UPI Help portal when needed.
Transaction ID, UTR and RRN: are they the same?
| Label | How to use it |
|---|---|
| UPI transaction or reference ID | The app’s main identifier for the UPI payment. |
| UTR or bank reference | A bank-side reference used to trace the transfer. |
| RRN | A retrieval reference used by payment systems and banks. |
| App order ID | An app or merchant identifier; useful, but not always the bank’s UPI reference. |
Users often call every reference a UTR. That is understandable, but a complaint should include all identifiers visible on the transaction because the app, bank and merchant may use different fields.
Where to find the UPI reference
- Open Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or your bank’s UPI app.
- Go to transaction history, payment history or balance history.
- Select the affected payment.
- Expand Transaction details, Payment details or View receipt.
- Copy the UPI reference/transaction ID and save the receipt.
- Check your bank statement for the corresponding debit or reversal reference.
Google Pay, for example, places transaction details under See transaction history. The exact menu can change after an app update.
What evidence should you collect?
- UPI reference, UTR or RRN shown by the app or bank
- Amount, date and exact time
- Transaction status: pending, failed or successful
- Payer and payee UPI IDs, with unnecessary personal details masked when sharing screenshots
- Bank account’s last four digits
- App complaint ID and bank complaint number
- Bank statement showing debit, credit or reversal
Never post a full statement, mobile number or UPI ID publicly. Share evidence only through official complaint channels.
How to raise an NPCI UPI complaint
- First open the transaction in the UPI app and use its Help, Having issues? or Report a problem option.
- Choose the exact issue, such as account debited but beneficiary not credited, merchant not credited, pending transaction or unauthorised payment.
- Save the app’s complaint ID.
- Contact the bank whose account was debited if the issue is unresolved or the reversal timeline has passed.
- Visit upihelp.npci.org.in, enter the requested transaction details and follow the portal’s complaint/status flow.
- Keep the NPCI complaint or acknowledgement number and check its status through the same official portal.
Type the NPCI address yourself or follow a link from NPCI’s official website. Do not pay an “agent” to register a complaint.
Know the reversal timeline before escalating
Under RBI’s failed-transaction framework, a person-to-person UPI transfer that debits the sender but does not credit the beneficiary is due for auto-reversal by T+1 day. A merchant payment without confirmation is due for reversal within T+5 days. If the issue is a transfer to the wrong UPI ID, it is not a failed transaction and follows a different recovery process.
What if the complaint is not resolved?
Follow the grievance escalation published by the app and bank. If a regulated entity rejects the complaint, gives an unsatisfactory response or does not respond within the applicable period, check eligibility for the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme through the RBI Complaint Management System. Include the earlier complaint numbers.
Scam warning
A complaint, refund or reversal never requires you to reveal a UPI PIN or approve a collect request. NPCI does not need remote access to your phone. If the transaction was unauthorised, inform the bank immediately and call the national cybercrime helpline 1930.
Frequently asked questions
Can I complain without a UTR?
You may still start with the app and bank using the amount, time and account, but the transaction reference makes tracing faster and more reliable.
Is the UPI transaction ID secret?
It is not a PIN, but it is still transaction data. Share it only with the recipient when needed or through official support channels.
