How to clear Telegram cache without losing the chats and files you need

To free space in Telegram, use the app’s Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage controls and clear selected cached media. This is different from deleting messages or clearing chat history. Before cleaning up, save anything you must keep offline and take extra care with Secret Chats, whose contents are not stored in Telegram’s cloud.

The instructions below cover Telegram on Android and iPhone. Labels and the arrangement of storage controls can vary by app version. Start inside Telegram rather than using your phone’s Clear storage or uninstall option.

What is Telegram cache?

Cache is the local media Telegram keeps so you can reopen items without downloading them again. Busy groups and channels can leave a large collection of videos, pictures, documents and music on a phone even when you rarely revisit them.

For media still available in ordinary cloud chats, clearing the cached copy lets Telegram download it again when you open it. Telegram describes this distinction in its cache management explanation. A cache cleanup does not create a permanent archive: messages can still be deleted, expire or become inaccessible later.

Check these three things before clearing anything

  • Will you need the file without internet? Keep a separate local copy you can find through Files, Downloads or your photo library.
  • Is it from a Secret Chat? Do not assume another device or a cloud redownload will recover it.
  • Is Telegram your only copy? Save an authorised independent copy of important documents before relying on continued chat access.

Open a saved copy outside Telegram to confirm that it is complete. A thumbnail or a shortcut pointing back to the chat is not the same as an independently saved file. Respect the sender’s privacy and any restrictions on retaining or sharing their material.

How to clear Telegram cache on Android or iPhone

  1. Open Telegram and its Settings screen.
  2. Select Data and Storage, then Storage Usage.
  3. Allow the storage breakdown to finish calculating.
  4. Review the media categories and, where available, individual chats or large files.
  5. Choose the cached items you want to remove and read the confirmation before proceeding.

Stay in the storage cleanup screen. If the confirmation describes deleting messages, deleting a chat or clearing history, cancel and return to Storage Usage. Those are different actions.

Telegram’s storage controls announcement describes category views for media, files and music, along with separate retention settings for private chats, groups and channels. The exact layout on your installed version may differ.

Cloud chats, Secret Chats and Downloads are different

Ordinary Telegram cloud conversations can be available across your signed-in devices. Secret Chats are tied to the devices and login sessions where they were created. Telegram’s FAQ warns that logging out loses Secret Chats on that device. Do not log out to reclaim cache space.

A file explicitly saved to Downloads or Photos is also different from an app-managed cached copy. Check that location separately if Telegram’s cleanup did not free as much space as you expected. Avoid deleting both copies until you know which one you need.

For example, if you need a train ticket during a journey, open the independently saved ticket from your phone’s file manager before leaving home. That is more useful than assuming you will be able to retrieve the chat attachment when connectivity is poor.

Stop the cache growing back so quickly

In Storage Usage, review the cache-size and auto-remove controls your version offers. Choose a retention period that matches how often you revisit media, and keep exceptions only where they serve a practical need.

Then review Automatic media download under Data and Storage. Restricting large automatic downloads on mobile data can reduce repeated transfers after cleanup. Choose settings separately for the connections and conversation types shown in the app.

These controls solve different problems: retention determines how long cached material stays locally, while automatic downloads determine what the app fetches without you opening it. Neither should be confused with a conversation’s auto-delete message timer.

How to check the cleanup worked

Return to Storage Usage and compare the reported cache size. Then check your phone’s overall storage after it has refreshed. Do not expect the app itself, its database and all other saved files to disappear.

Open one non-essential cloud-chat attachment as a small verification test. It may download again, which also means cache use can start increasing immediately. If essential media will not reopen, stop further cleanup and check its original chat and any separately saved copy. Clearing more storage will not restore a deleted or unavailable message.
