A crypto address can look intimidating when you first see one. It is a long string of letters and numbers, such as 0x5e97...a120, that identifies an account on a blockchain. You use it to receive assets, view activity and interact with crypto applications.

This beginner guide explains the EVM wallet address, the networks that use it, suitable wallets and the difference between information you can share and secrets that can give someone control of your funds.

Wallet, account and address: what is the difference?

Account An onchain identity that can hold assets and perform actions.
Address The public identifier used to find that account on a specific network.

Your tokens do not sit inside the wallet app. They remain recorded on the blockchain. The wallet stores or protects the keys that let you control the account.

What is an EVM wallet address?

EVM stands for Ethereum Virtual Machine. It is the execution environment used by Ethereum and many compatible blockchains. A normal Ethereum account address contains 40 hexadecimal characters with 0x at the beginning, making 42 characters in total.

The wallet mathematically derives the address from a public key, which comes from the private key. Other people can see and use the address without calculating the private key behind it.

Capital letters can provide a checksum that helps detect typing errors. Therefore, copy the address exactly as the wallet displays it instead of typing it manually.

  • Send assets after signing a transaction with your wallet.
  • Connect to decentralised apps, exchanges, games and NFT platforms.

A wallet connection normally reveals your public address to the site. However, a transaction, token approval or signature request can authorise a meaningful action. Read every request before accepting it.

Which networks support EVM addresses?

The same address format works across Ethereum-compatible networks. Common examples include:

Your wallet may show the same 0x address on several of these networks. Nevertheless, the balances and transactions are separate on every chain. Ten USDC on Base is not automatically available on Ethereum or Arbitrum.

This is the most important beginner rule: a valid-looking address does not prove that you selected the correct network. Confirm the asset, network and recipient support before sending. Moving assets between networks usually requires a supported bridge or a platform withdrawal option for the destination chain.

Download a wallet only from its official website or verified app-store listing. A fake extension can create an address controlled by a scammer or steal the recovery phrase you enter.

A public address is safe to share when someone needs to send you assets. Still, it is not private. Anyone can paste it into the correct block explorer and see its balance, tokens and transaction history. Once you connect an address to your real name or social profile, others may analyse that activity.

Consider using separate addresses for public activity, everyday apps and long-term holdings. This improves organisation and reduces casual exposure, although transfers between those addresses can create a visible link.

  1. Open the wallet and select the intended account.
  2. Choose the correct network.
  3. Copy the address from the wallet; do not type it.
  4. Tell the sender both the address and required network.
  5. Confirm that the asset is supported on that network.
  6. For a large transfer, send a small test amount first.

  1. Copy the destination from a fresh, trusted source rather than old transaction history.
  2. Verify more than the first and last few characters; address-poisoning scams imitate shortened addresses.
  3. Confirm the network shown by the sending platform and receiving wallet.
  4. Check the token, amount and network fee.
  5. Send a test transaction when the amount is meaningful.
  6. Remember that confirmed blockchain transfers are generally irreversible.

Wallet address versus token contract address

Both can begin with 0x, but they are not interchangeable. A wallet address belongs to a user or account. A token contract address identifies the smart contract for a token on one network. Never send funds to a contract address unless the project explicitly provides a supported deposit function.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone steal crypto with only my public address?

No. A public address alone does not let someone spend your assets. The main risks are loss of privacy, scam tokens and attackers targeting you with convincing phishing messages.

Can I use my Ethereum address on Base or Arbitrum?

Usually yes for a standard EVM account, but you must select the correct network. Assets sent on Base remain on Base until you bridge or transfer them through a supported route.

Should support ever ask for my seed phrase?

No. A legitimate wallet, exchange or project support agent does not need your seed phrase or private key. Anyone asking for either can take control of the wallet.
