A PhonePe payment can fail or remain pending even after your bank balance has gone down. It is alarming, but it does not automatically mean that the money is lost. UPI payments pass through the app, the payer’s bank, NPCI, the receiver’s bank and sometimes a merchant system. A delayed response at any point can leave PhonePe waiting for a final status.
This guide explains what the status means, what you should check first and when you should raise a complaint. The information was checked on September 1, 2026.
First, check whether PhonePe says failed or pending
| Status | What it usually means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Failed | The payment did not complete. | Do not immediately repeat a large payment. Check your bank statement and wait for the reversal. |
| Pending | The banks or UPI network have not returned a final result. | Wait for the status to change. Avoid paying again unless the recipient confirms that nothing was received. |
| Successful | PhonePe received a success response. | If the receiver has not received it, use the separate beneficiary-tracing steps below and keep the UTR. |
What to do immediately
- Open PhonePe and select History.
- Open the affected transaction and note its status, date, amount and UTR or transaction reference.
- Check your bank’s own app, SMS or statement. A PhonePe notification alone is not the final bank record.
- Ask the receiver or merchant to check their bank statement, not only their app notification.
- Take screenshots that show the status and reference number, but hide your balance and personal information before sharing them.
Should you try the payment again?
Do not retry while the first transaction is pending, particularly at a shop where the merchant may receive a delayed success confirmation. A second attempt can produce two valid debits. If the purchase is urgent, first ask the merchant to check the payment against the UTR and use a different method only after both sides confirm that the first payment has not arrived.
How long should the reversal take?
The Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction framework separates person-to-person transfers from merchant payments. If your account was debited but another person’s account was not credited, the reversal should be completed by T+1 day. If your account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation, the maximum auto-reversal period is T+5 days. Here, T is the calendar date of the transaction.
The RBI framework also provides compensation of ₹100 per day when reversal is delayed beyond the applicable T+1 or T+5 deadline. This does not mean every pending transaction takes that long; many resolve much sooner.
How to report the transaction in PhonePe
- Open the transaction from PhonePe History.
- Choose the help or contact support option shown on that transaction.
- Select the closest issue, such as money debited, payment failed or payment pending.
- Keep the complaint reference number generated by the app.
If the in-app route does not resolve the issue, contact the bank whose account was debited and provide the UTR, amount, date and PhonePe complaint reference. You can also check or raise a UPI complaint through the official NPCI UPI Help portal.
Common reasons this happens
- Your bank or the recipient’s bank was temporarily unavailable.
- The UPI request timed out before a final response reached PhonePe.
- The merchant system did not receive confirmation even though the debit request started.
- The transaction crossed a bank limit or triggered a risk check.
- Connectivity was interrupted during authentication.
Safety warning
You never need to enter a UPI PIN to receive a refund. Do not scan a QR code, approve a collect request or install a screen-sharing app because someone claims that these steps will release your refund. Use only the help option inside PhonePe, your bank’s official channels or the NPCI portal.
When to escalate further
If the bank or PhonePe does not resolve the complaint within the stated timeline, follow PhonePe’s published escalation levels: customer support, grievance redressal and then the nodal officer. An unresolved complaint can ultimately be taken to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman after completing the required complaint process.
