PhonePe showing a green success message while the receiver says no money arrived can create an awkward situation. The most important step is to stop relying on notifications and verify the transaction in both bank accounts.
A successful UPI status normally means the payment network accepted the transfer, but the receiver may be checking the wrong linked account, seeing a delayed balance update or overlooking the bank narration. Here is how to trace it without paying twice.
Do these checks before sending another payment
- Open PhonePe History and select the transaction.
- Confirm the recipient name, UPI ID or masked account details shown on the receipt.
- Copy or write down the UTR or UPI transaction reference.
- Ask the receiver to check the statement for every bank account linked to that UPI ID or mobile number.
- Ask them to refresh their bank app or use net banking. An app notification can be delayed even when the account is credited.
Why the receiver may be checking the wrong account
A person can have several UPI IDs and several bank accounts. A payment sent to a phone number can also follow the UPI-number mapping registered by the receiver. The money therefore may reach a different linked or default bank account than the one the receiver expected. The receipt’s recipient details and UTR are more reliable than a contact name saved on the sender’s phone.
What the UTR proves
The UTR is the reference used by banks to trace the transfer. Share the UTR with the receiver, not your UPI PIN, OTP or full bank statement. Their bank can search for an incoming credit using that reference. Your bank can use the same number to confirm where the transaction was routed.
How to raise the issue through PhonePe
- Open the successful transaction from History.
- Tap the help or support option attached to that payment.
- Select the option that says the receiver or merchant has not received the money.
- Submit the issue and save the complaint reference.
If PhonePe confirms that the transaction was successful, the sender should contact the debited bank and the receiver should contact the beneficiary bank. Provide the UTR, date, time and amount. The banks can trace the payment across the UPI network.
What if this was a merchant payment?
Ask the merchant to check the payment using the UTR or transaction reference instead of scanning their notification list. If the merchant still cannot find it, preserve the invoice or order number. PhonePe’s grievance policy recommends contacting the merchant first for purchase-related issues and then approaching the bank or NPCI if the matter remains unresolved.
Do not confuse a successful transfer with a pending one
If the transaction is actually pending, wait for the final status rather than following the successful-payment route. A pending payment can still become successful or fail and reverse. Sending again before that decision can cause a duplicate debit.
If the recipient details were wrong
A successful UPI payment cannot simply be cancelled after you enter the UPI PIN. Contact your bank immediately and request a wrong-credit or chargeback process using the UTR. Recovery generally depends on bank investigation and the recipient’s cooperation. Do not threaten or publicly share the recipient’s details.
Protect yourself from fake refund support
No genuine support executive needs your UPI PIN to trace a successful transaction. Receiving money does not require scanning a QR code or approving a collect request. Keep complaints inside the PhonePe app, the official PhonePe website, your bank or NPCI UPI Help.
