PhonePe Refund Not Received: How to Check UTR and Raise a Complaint

PhonePe refund tracking illustration with UTR and complaint-status indicators

If a PhonePe refund is not received, first identify whether you are waiting for an automatic reversal after a failed payment or a refund deliberately initiated by a merchant. The correct timeline and responsible party can differ, so identify the transaction type before raising repeated tickets.

A PhonePe refund not received complaint is easier to trace when you preserve the original UTR, merchant confirmation and complaint reference from the beginning.

PhonePe refund not received: reversal versus merchant refund

Type Who starts it What to trace
Failed-payment reversal The payment system or bank Original UPI transaction and reversal entry
Merchant refund The seller or service provider Merchant confirmation plus refund reference
Cancelled recharge or bill payment PhonePe, biller or operator flow Order status and refund destination

Step 1: Open the original PhonePe transaction

Go to History and inspect the exact payment. Note whether it is failed, pending, successful, cancelled or marked refunded. Save the UTR, order ID, amount and date. Do not share screenshots containing your full bank balance or personal details publicly.

Step 2: Check the destination of the refund

Next, remember that a refund normally returns to the original payment source. Check a bank-account refund in the linked bank statement. Do not assume it will appear in a PhonePe Wallet or another account simply because you used PhonePe for the payment.

Step 3: Search the bank statement, not just PhonePe

However, refund descriptions vary by bank. Look around the expected date for a credit, reversal or UPI return entry matching the amount. The credit may not use the merchant’s familiar display name.

Applicable failed-payment timelines

Under the RBI framework, an unsuccessful person-to-person UPI debit should reverse by T+1 day. A merchant UPI payment where confirmation was not received has a T+5-day auto-reversal limit. Delays beyond the relevant deadline attract ₹100 per day in compensation under the framework.

By contrast, a discretionary merchant refund follows the merchant’s initiation and processing flow. Therefore, ask the merchant for the refund reference and initiation date. Count from the confirmed initiation date, not merely from the day you first requested cancellation.

How to raise a PhonePe complaint

  1. Open the original transaction from History.
  2. Choose its help or support option.
  3. Select the refund, reversal or money-debited issue that best matches the status.
  4. Attach only the information requested through the official form.
  5. Save the complaint reference and check its status before submitting duplicates.

What to provide to your bank

  • Original UPI transaction ID or UTR
  • Refund reference, if supplied by the merchant
  • Transaction and promised-refund dates
  • Amount and merchant or recipient details
  • PhonePe complaint reference

Escalation path

Finally, PhonePe publishes a staged escalation path from customer support to grievance redressal and its nodal officer. If the issue remains unresolved after the regulated complaint process, you can approach the RBI Integrated Ombudsman. Meanwhile, NPCI UPI Help can check status and accept eligible UPI complaints.

Refund scams to avoid

Most importantly, you do not enter a UPI PIN to receive a refund. Never approve a collect request, scan a QR code or install a remote-access app for “refund verification.” A caller who needs your OTP, PIN or card CVV is not processing a normal refund.
