Cheapest Voice-Only Plans Compared: Airtel, Jio, Vi and the Tata Question

Airtel vs Jio vs Vi Voice Plans

Customers who mainly need calls and SMS do not necessarily need a daily data recharge. Voice-and-SMS-only plans offer an alternative, but the lowest recharge price and the lowest ongoing cost are different things.

There is also a correction to make before comparing operators: Tata Docomo is no longer a separate consumer mobile network. Its consumer mobile business merged into Airtel effective July 1, 2019. This article compares the confirmed no-data options from Airtel, Jio and Vi and explains where Tata fits.

Airtel: ₹185 for a smaller upfront payment

  • The Airtel ₹185 pack includes unlimited domestic calls and 300 SMS for 28 days, without bundled mobile data.
  • Its effective cost is approximately ₹6.61 per day.
  • Other short-validity options include ₹203 for 30 days and ₹206 for one calendar month, each with unlimited calls and 300 SMS.
  • Customers prepared to pay more upfront can consider ₹469 for 84 days with 900 SMS, or ₹1,849 for 365 days with 3,600 SMS. Both include unlimited calls without bundled data.
  • The longer packs work out to approximately ₹5.58 and ₹5.07 per day, respectively.

For a customer who wants to spend less when recharging, the ₹185 pack is attractive. However, repeating it is more expensive than choosing a longer-validity pack when the customer needs continuous service.

Jio: ₹448 for 84 days

  • Jio’s confirmed ₹448 voice-and-SMS pack includes unlimited domestic calling and 1,000 SMS for 84 days.
  • There is no bundled mobile data.
  • The effective cost is approximately ₹5.33 per day, equivalent to ₹149.33 per 28 days.
  • Its ₹1,748 alternative includes unlimited calling and 3,600 SMS for 336 days.
  • That longer pack costs approximately ₹5.20 per day.

The ₹448 payment is higher than Airtel’s ₹185, but it buys three times the validity. It is also ₹21 cheaper than Airtel’s ₹469 pack over the same 84 days.

Jio’s ₹189 pack should be compared separately: it includes data. Similarly, the ₹123 recharge belongs to the eligible 4G feature-phone category, rather than being a general smartphone voice-only alternative.

Vi: ₹470 for 84 days

  • Vi’s ₹470 voice-and-SMS recharge includes unlimited domestic calling and 900 SMS for 84 days.
  • It does not include mobile data.
  • The effective cost is approximately ₹5.60 per day.
  • Vi also lists a ₹1,849 option with unlimited calling and 3,600 SMS for 365 days.
  • The annual option works out to approximately ₹5.07 per day.

For an 84-day recharge, Vi costs ₹22 more than Jio and ₹1 more than Airtel. Those differences are small enough that reliable reception at home or work should carry more weight than the headline saving.

Tata: No separate consumer mobile recharge to compare

  • Tata Docomo’s consumer mobile operations merged into Airtel in 2019.
  • An old Tata Docomo recharge list should not be presented as a current competing offer.
  • Customers using a former Tata consumer mobile connection should check the plans available for their number through Airtel.

Tata’s business telecom services are a separate category and do not make it a fourth retail mobile recharge operator in this comparison.

Which offers the best value?

  • Lowest upfront payment among the confirmed voice-only packs above: Airtel ₹185.
  • Lowest price for an 84-day pack among those compared: Jio ₹448.
  • Lowest daily cost among the listed long-validity packs: Airtel and Vi ₹1,849 for 365 days, at approximately ₹5.07 per day.
  • Best practical choice: the suitable plan on the network that provides dependable reception where you use the phone.

Jio’s ₹1,748 pack has a lower upfront price than the ₹1,849 packs, but its 336-day validity is 29 days shorter. It should not be described as a full-year recharge.

All SMS allowances mentioned above are total allowances for the pack validity period, not daily allowances. The equivalent daily and 28-day figures are calculations, not separate recharge prices.

Plan availability can change by number, circle and date. Confirm the final offer in the operator’s app before paying. This is a comparison of confirmed voice-and-SMS-only packs, not every operator’s cheapest bundled plan or the minimum conditions for retaining an unused number. BSNL is outside this article’s requested operator list.
