PhonePe Transaction Limit Exceeded: Daily Limits and Possible Fixes

PhonePe UPI transaction limit exceeded illustration with a daily limit meter

PhonePe can show “transaction limit exceeded” even when your bank account has enough money. The limit may belong to your bank, UPI, the transaction category or a temporary security control. PhonePe cannot override a restriction imposed by the bank.

Which limit may have been reached?

  • Per-transaction limit: the maximum allowed in one payment.
  • Daily amount limit: the total value sent during the bank’s daily window.
  • Daily count limit: the number of UPI transactions allowed.
  • New-user or new-device limit: a temporary security cap after registration or device change.
  • Merchant-category limit: certain eligible categories can have different ceilings.
  • Bank risk limit: a restriction triggered by unusual or repeated activity.

Do not assume every account has the same ₹1 lakh limit

₹1 lakh is commonly cited as the standard UPI ceiling for ordinary transactions, but the actual amount available to you can be lower because the issuing bank controls account-level limits. Special categories and newer UPI features can follow different caps. The error shown for your selected bank account is therefore more important than a generic number found online.

What to check

  1. Open PhonePe History and total the UPI payments already attempted that day, including payments made through other UPI apps using the same bank account.
  2. Check whether failed or pending attempts are still affecting the bank’s risk or count controls.
  3. Review the UPI limit published by your bank for your account type.
  4. Confirm whether you recently changed phones, SIMs, PINs or linked the account again.
  5. Contact the bank if the limit error appears on a small first payment.

Will splitting the payment fix it?

Splitting can help only when the problem is a per-transaction cap and you remain within the daily amount and count limits. Repeated smaller attempts can make matters worse when the daily total, transaction count or a security control has already been reached. Do not structure payments to bypass a restriction or compliance check.

When does the limit reset?

The reset window depends on the bank and the type of restriction. A normal daily limit may reset on the bank’s next daily cycle, while a security restriction may last longer or require bank verification. PhonePe cannot guarantee a midnight reset for every bank.

Can another linked bank account work?

Another account may have an independent bank limit. Use it only if the payment is legitimate, the earlier transaction clearly failed and the recipient has not been credited. Do not use a second account while the first payment remains pending.

If money was deducted despite the error

Treat it as a failed or pending transaction rather than merely a limit issue. Preserve the UTR, check the final status and follow the applicable auto-reversal process. Do not repeatedly send the same amount.

Security note

No support agent can “increase” your UPI limit by asking for your PIN, OTP, card CVV or remote access. Limit changes, where supported, must happen through official bank or app settings and may require bank approval.
