If you sent money to the wrong person through PhonePe and the payment is successful, there is no simple cancel button. Entering the UPI PIN authorises an immediate bank transfer. Recovery may still be possible, but you should act quickly and use formal bank channels.
First confirm what actually happened
- Open PhonePe History and select the transaction.
- Check whether it is successful, pending or failed.
- Verify the recipient name, UPI ID or masked bank details.
- Save the UTR, amount, date and time.
- Take a screenshot for your records without posting personal details publicly.
If the transaction is pending, do not treat it as cancelled. It can still complete. If it failed, wait for the reversal instead of contacting an unrelated recipient.
Contact your bank immediately
Call the official number on the bank’s website or visit the branch. Ask to register an incorrect-beneficiary or wrong-credit complaint for the UPI transaction. Provide the UTR and request a complaint reference. PhonePe’s own guidance says the bank may contact the recipient on your behalf or facilitate communication with the beneficiary bank.
Contacting the recipient
If you legitimately know the recipient, make one polite request and share only enough transaction information for them to identify the credit. Do not threaten them, publish their phone number or attempt to obtain private bank information. A bank-facilitated request is safer when the recipient is unknown.
Can PhonePe pull the money back?
PhonePe is the app used to initiate the UPI instruction, but a successful transfer moves between bank accounts. PhonePe cannot unilaterally debit the receiver after completion. The beneficiary’s bank and the recipient generally need to participate in the recovery process.
Raise the issue in PhonePe
- Open the transaction.
- Select its help or support option.
- Choose the incorrect-transfer issue if available.
- Keep the PhonePe complaint reference along with the bank complaint number.
Use the NPCI complaint route
If the bank process does not resolve the matter, use the official NPCI UPI Help or dispute-redressal channel. Enter the exact UTR and transaction details. Do not pay a third party that promises guaranteed recovery.
What if the transfer was caused by fraud?
If someone deceived you into authorising the transfer, report it immediately to your bank and the national cybercrime helpline at 1930, and use the official cybercrime reporting portal. A fraud report is different from an accidental wrong-recipient complaint, so describe the facts accurately.
Refund scams after a wrong transfer
A recipient returning your money does not need your UPI PIN. Be cautious if anyone asks you to scan a QR code, approve a collect request, install an app or share an OTP to “reverse” the transfer. Those steps can create another debit.
How to avoid this next time
- Verify the name displayed after entering the UPI ID or scanning the QR code.
- For a new recipient, send a small test amount first.
- Do not rely only on the contact name stored on your phone.
- Pause if the merchant or recipient name looks unrelated.
- Review the amount before entering the UPI PIN.
