In practice, you can trade NFTs on Base with a compatible wallet and a marketplace that supports the Base network. Lower network fees can make small purchases more practical than on Ethereum mainnet, but they do not remove collection, contract or marketplace risks.
Therefore, this guide uses OpenSea as the main example because its current documentation lists Base support for purchases, listings, drops and minting. However, the same safety checks apply to other marketplaces.
What you need to trade Base NFTs
- An EVM wallet that supports Base.
- ETH or the payment token required by the listing.
- A small ETH balance for gas.
- The official collection page or verified contract address.
In addition, start with our Base blockchain guide and MetaMask and Base funding guide if your wallet is not ready.
How Base NFT ownership works
For example, an NFT is a token recorded by a smart contract. Your wallet does not store an image file in the same way a phone gallery does. It controls the address recorded as the token owner, while the NFT’s metadata can point to onchain or offchain content.
Therefore, the contract address and token ID are more reliable identifiers than an item name or picture. Scammers can copy artwork and create a different collection.
Step 1: Prepare and fund the wallet
- Add or select the Base network in your wallet.
- Fund the wallet with ETH or the required payment token on Base.
- Keep extra ETH available for marketplace transactions.
- Confirm the balance on BaseScan.
However, sending ETH to the same address on Ethereum does not place that ETH on Base. Use a direct Base withdrawal or a supported bridge.
Step 2: Open the real marketplace
However, type the marketplace address yourself or follow a link from its official help center. Bookmark it after verification. Fake marketplace advertisements can imitate the design and ask for a malicious signature.
For instance, when connecting, the wallet may ask which accounts to share. For example, a normal connection lets the site see the selected public address. It does not require a recovery phrase.
Step 3: Find and verify a Base collection
- Filter the marketplace network to Base.
- Search for the collection name.
- Compare the collection contract with the creator’s official website or social profile.
- Review trading activity, owner distribution and item history.
- Open the contract in BaseScan if anything is unclear.
For example, a verified badge can help, but it should not replace contract verification. Also, a genuine collection can still lose value or have risky permissions.
How to buy a listed NFT on Base
- Open the verified item page.
- Confirm the chain is Base.
- Check the contract address, token ID, seller and listed payment token.
- Select the buy option.
- Review the total, including marketplace, creator and network fees.
- Read the wallet transaction summary.
- Confirm and wait for the transaction hash.
- Verify ownership on BaseScan or refresh the profile after confirmation.
Therefore, NFT transactions are normally irreversible. For example, a low price is not a reason to skip the final contract and chain check.
How to make an offer
For example, an offer lets you propose a price instead of accepting the current listing. Depending on the marketplace, the offer may use wrapped ETH or another supported token.
- Check which currency the offer requires.
- Review the collection floor and recent sales without assuming they predict future prices.
- Set the offer amount and expiry carefully.
- Approve only the necessary token amount when possible.
- Sign the offer and save its expiry details.
Meanwhile, cancel old offers when you no longer want them. Otherwise, an offer may remain fillable until it expires or is cancelled under the marketplace’s rules.
How to sell an NFT on Base
- Connect the wallet that owns the NFT.
- Open the item from your profile.
- Select the listing option.
- Choose a fixed price or another supported sale type.
- Set the payment token and expiry.
- Review marketplace and creator fees.
- Approve the collection contract only if the marketplace requires it.
- Sign the listing and confirm that it appears publicly.
OpenSea fees to understand
As of its May 12, 2026 help-center update, OpenSea says it typically charges a 1% fee for NFT sales and a 10% fee for minting in a primary drop. Prices and fee rules can change, so check the current confirmation screen rather than relying only on an old guide.
As a result, creator earnings may be enforced or optional depending on the collection. Buyers may also pay Base gas, while sellers can pay gas for actions such as accepting an offer or granting an approval.
How to transfer a Base NFT
For example, a transfer sends the NFT directly to another address without a marketplace sale.
- Confirm the recipient can use Base NFTs.
- Paste the recipient’s public EVM address.
- Check the address character by character at both ends.
- Confirm the selected item and chain.
- Pay the Base gas fee and verify the transfer on BaseScan.
However, sending an NFT to an exchange deposit address or an incompatible contract can permanently lock it.
Common Base NFT scams
- Copied collection: similar name and stolen artwork, but a different contract.
- Fake buyer support: a stranger claims you must send funds to fix a sale.
- Malicious approval: a site asks for broad access unrelated to the intended NFT.
- Counterfeit mint: a social post links to a wallet drainer.
- Unexpected airdrop: an unknown NFT contains a URL designed to trigger a scam.
Meanwhile, OpenSea says it will not message first on social media or ask a seller to send funds to resolve a transaction failure.
Common problems and fixes
The NFT does not appear in the wallet
For example, check BaseScan or the marketplace profile. Some wallets do not automatically display every NFT even when the address owns it.
The buy transaction fails
However, the listing may have expired, another buyer may have purchased it or the wallet may lack gas. Refresh the listing, confirm Base is selected and request a new quote.
The sale approval looks too broad
Before continuing, cancel the request if it does not match the verified marketplace and collection. Review the approval target before trying again.
The NFT was sent to the wrong address
Additionally, onchain transfers generally cannot be reversed. However, the current controller of the destination address would need to return it.
Frequently asked questions
Does OpenSea support Base?
Still, yes. Its current supported-chain list includes Base.
Do I need ETH to buy a Base NFT?
Consequently, you need the listing’s payment token and enough gas. Base gas is paid in ETH, although some wallet features may abstract or convert fees.
Is every Base NFT visible in MetaMask?
For instance, no. Display support varies. However, the ownership record on the verified contract and BaseScan is the stronger check.
