UPI Not Working After Changing Phone or SIM: How to Fix It

If UPI is not working after changing phone or replacing a SIM, the usual problem is device and mobile-number verification. UPI apps must confirm that the SIM in the phone uses the number registered with the bank. The verification normally sends an SMS from that SIM.

Quick answer: Insert and activate the bank-registered SIM, set it as the default for outgoing SMS, keep enough balance or an SMS-enabled plan, allow the app’s required permissions and retry on mobile data. Do not keep retrying after the verification-attempt limit is reached.

First check what changed

Change What UPI needs
New phone, same SIM and number Fresh device/SIM verification and bank-account reactivation.
Replacement SIM, same number The new SIM must be active and able to send SMS; bank security controls may add a cooling period.
New phone number The new number must first be updated with the bank, then used in the UPI app.
Dual-SIM phone The bank-registered SIM must be selected for outgoing verification SMS.

UPI not working after changing phone: fix it step by step

  1. Confirm that the SIM’s mobile number is exactly the number registered with your bank account.
  2. Make a normal call and send a test SMS to confirm the SIM is active.
  3. On a dual-SIM phone, set the bank-linked SIM as the default for SMS. Disable “Ask every time” temporarily.
  4. Check that your mobile plan supports outgoing SMS and has sufficient balance.
  5. Update the UPI app and give it the permissions requested for verification.
  6. Use mobile data from the same SIM during setup if the app recommends it.
  7. Re-add or reactivate the bank account and complete the verification flow.

Do not restore an old app backup and assume UPI is active. A login can be restored while the bank account still requires fresh device binding.

“SMS verification failed” or “too many attempts”

NPCI limits bank-account verification SMS attempts. Google Pay’s official guidance says more than three attempts within 24 hours can block further verification for the next 24 hours. Trying again before the period ends can extend the block from the latest attempt. Stop and wait rather than repeatedly tapping verify.

If the first attempt fails, check the default SIM, SMS balance, network signal and messaging permissions before the next attempt. Clearing the messaging app cache may help with a local SMS problem, but it does not override a bank or NPCI block.

If you changed the mobile number

Changing the number only inside the payment app is not enough. Update the registered mobile number with the bank first and wait until the bank confirms the change. Then set up the account again in the UPI app. Existing UPI IDs or mandates associated with the old profile may need separate management.

Check active mandates after the move. If you need help, our UPI AutoPay cancellation guide explains how mandates are managed.

When to contact the operator, app or bank

  • Mobile operator: the SIM cannot send SMS or remains inactive.
  • UPI app: verification succeeds but the app cannot discover or activate the account.
  • Bank: the correct number is not recognised, the account is missing, or a bank security restriction remains.

Security checks on a new phone

Download the app only from the official app store. Never let a caller remotely “activate” UPI through screen sharing. Do not share an OTP, debit-card details or UPI PIN. Enter them only in the app’s secure bank verification flow.

Frequently asked questions

Will my old UPI PIN work on the new phone?

Usually yes, because the PIN is tied to the bank account. The device must still complete verification before payments work.

Can I use Wi-Fi for UPI registration?

The app may work over Wi-Fi later, but some setup flows recommend mobile data from the registered SIM to complete device verification.

Official sources

Use only official app and bank support. No genuine activation process requires you to reveal a UPI PIN to another person.
