Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Detailed – Features, Specs and Improvements

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is the new flagship chipset, made for the best phones of 2017. Well before the actual announcement, we’ve got all the details of this new processor, thanks to the well known tipster Evleaks.

Using a new 10nm design with more than three billion ultra-efficient transistors, Snapdragon 835 is 30 percent smaller than Snapdragon 820. The Snapdragon 835 uses 40 percent less power than the previous generation and provides up to a 27 percent performance increase. This will allow the smartphone manufacturers to make thinner phones, if needed, with no compromise to the battery size or capacity.

The new chipset focuses on five prime features.

  • Ultra-fast charging and multi-day battery life
  • Jaw-dropping virtual and live immersion
  • The most advanced camera capabilities
  • Gigabit LTE connectivity
  • Inside-out security

These features will be complemented by machine learning so that the devices become intelligent with time.

For a better battery life

Snapdragon 835 calls on the Qualcomm Kryo 280 CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 540 GPU, and Qualcomm Hexagon DSP to manage separate workloads — all of them tightly integrated by Qualcomm Symphony System Manager to support better thermals and longer battery life.

With that, Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 provides five hours of battery life for five minutes of charging.

Immersive AR and VR experience

The new chipset caters to three most important VR requirements: accurate audio, vibrant visuals, and intuitive interactions. It offers 25 percent faster 3D graphic rendering and 60X more display colors when compared to Snapdragon 820.

The Snapdragon 835 supports scene- and object-based audio and audiophile-grade DSD audio. The improvement in VR and AR technology in the SoC is due to heterogeneous computing approach that isolates different parts of Snapdragon 835 for audio, video, and motion functions, delivering the best user experience and the most efficient processing.

Aim at better camera support

Qualcomm’s newest generation of video stabilization software, EIS 3.0, provides superior, 4K video stabilization through advanced yaw, roll, and rolling shutter correction. The Qualcomm Hexagon DSP, Qualcomm Spectra 180 ISP, and Adreno 540 GPU work together in producing a smooth zoom experience.

There is an additional support to Dual Photodiode (2PD) and along with that, Qualcomm has bettered the hybrid autofocus system. Qualcomm Clear Sight is engineered to fuse together images for improved sharpness, noise reduction, and dynamic range.

Better connectivity options

The chipset has integrated Snapdragon X16 LTE modem and customized support for 802.11ad Wi-Fi, giving power users gigabit and multi-gigabit experiences wherever they are. The modem boasts advanced 256-QAM digital signal processing, receives data on four antennas through 4×4 MIMO, and supports up to 4X carrier aggregation.

The new architecture for the chipset allows the modem to have a 45 percent smaller footprint and 60 percent better power efficiency.

Security enhancement

In the Snapdragon 835, there is Qualcomm Haven Security Platform that provides three layers of security on SoC, device, and system levels. Haven uses pins and fingerprints to authenticate the user interface and eye- and face-based security to authenticate the camera. At the same time, Haven runs device attestation on the software, apps and OS, and hardware. The end result is a security platform that continuously and thoroughly authenticates both the user and the device, protecting the reams of new information and transactions taking place on our phones.

The Machine Learning Process

The above five elements are made better with time, thanks to the learning capability and process of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor. In the real-life scenario, it is the object recognition while using camera, real-time hand tracking while experiencing VR content, voice recognition for AR virtual assistants, biometric authentication, etc.
