Tokyo Police introduce Interceptor drones with Nets to catch other Drones

Tokyo Police have added Net carrying Drones to their fleet to bring down rogue drones flying around in a suspicious manner in sensitive areas. This addition of drones has been planned after a four-propellor drone carrying trace amounts of radioactive caesium along with smoke canister and a plastic container filled with radiation-contaminated soil was intercepted on the top of the prime minister’s office in April, raising terror concerns.

Yoshihide Suga, the chief cabinet secretary, said at a press conference, said, “This situation concerns the centre of the Japanese government, the prime minister’s office, and we will take every necessary measures, including a detailed investigation by police”.

The Drone will have the nets measure two metres by three metres, suspended below the interceptor’s body which will be flown towards the suspicious drone to intercept and trap it in the net before taking it down. The Riot police are the ones equipped with the controls to the interceptor drone. The Police will be first warning the suspicious drone operator before taking it down.

The radioactivity levels of the caesium carried by the drone flying over Priminister’s office was only a maximum of 1 microsievert of gamma rays per hour, a level that is not harmful to humans. But this shows how deadly drones can turn out to be, the negative implications are huge. In Japan, it is illegal to fly drones over airports, roads, 150 meters above the ground and certain locations. If there are any drones flying in these restricted areas the interceptor drones will be put into action.

There are many positive opportunities which arise with Drones are in a similar way there are negative implications as well which have to be checked. There have been other devices designed to take down rogue drones, the Skywall 100 is one such device shaped like a Bazooka, it also uses a net to intercept drones but in a whole different way.
