One of the very handy features in an Android smartphone is its Google Now function. The separate screen shows you a lot of useful information, including weather info, as well as some of the important links to websites based on your browsing history, and even information about your travel scanned from the mails.
But what is even more helpful, is the “Ok Google” voice function, which gets activated whenever you say Ok Google. When you are on the home screen, you can tap on the microphone icon in Google search bar, or directly say “Ok Google” to activate the function. But, by default it is only this home screen where this feature works. Let’s get you through to set it up on Motorola Moto G 3rd gen.
How to enable Ok Google voice detection everywhere
For this, you need to change an option in the Google Now settings. To reach the settings, there are two ways:
- Tap and hold the home screen to se a few options, the last one of them being Google Now settings
- Scroll to Google Now, the last left home screen. In that, tap on the menu icon in the Google bar, and then tap on Settings.
In this settings, tap on the third option, i.e. “Voice”. Here, the second option “Ok Google detection” is where you need to tap.
In the Ok Google detection settings, you’ll see the first option already selected. The second one, i.e. “From any screen” is what you need to activate. It will work even when the screen is locked, or when you are using any application. Once you tap on “Get started”, the system will begin a training program to understand your voice, and you have to say “Ok Google” three times.
Once that is done, the setting will be saved, and a voice model will be saved as well. You may retrain the voice, or even delete the one that is saved, if in future you want Google Now to recognize the voice and act upon the command.
“From any screen is not working for my language”
For some users, the “From any screen” feature in Ok Google detection settings would not allow to toggle it, and would say “This feature is current unavailable for this language”. That is because the Ok Google function is working only for Google U.S.
Go to Google Now settings and the first option, i.e. Language, and here, make sure you are selecting English (US) as the language. It won’t work even with English (UK) selected.
