Sharp unveils the Aquos R2 with with Dolby Vision and HDR10

Sharp has unveiled its flagship smartphone for 2018, the Sharp Aquos R2, today, in Japan. The smartphone has an Essential Phone-like tiny notch on the front underneath which lies a high refresh rate display. The Aquos line-up from Sharp has had phones with a peculiar design & feature-set and a near top bezel-less displays.

Display

The Aquos R2 packs a 6″ WQHD+ IGZO LCD display with a resolution of 3040×1440 pixels. The 19:9 display has a 100 Hz refresh rate that is covered under 2.5D curved glass. It has Dolby Vision support and also supports playback of HDR 10 AND VP 9 HDR content.

Processor, RAM & Storage

The phone is powered by the beefy Snapdragon 845 chipset and Adreno 630 GPU. It also has 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, which be expanded up to an extra 400 GB via a microSD card. The phone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.

Cameras

The Aquos R2 sports a dual camera combination on the back but each camera has a different purpose to serve. One camera is used solely for video recording which uses a 16.3 MP sensor. The other 22.6 MP unit is used to take still photos. To the front, the 16.3 MP front-facing camera is housed in a notch.

The 16.3 MP camera can shoot 135° wide-angle 4K videos, although the FOV is narrowed down when Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) is turned on. There’s AI implemented in-camera software that automatically takes photos while recording a video.

Miscellaneous

The phone comes with a front mounted fingerprint scanner that resides in the bottom chin. The phone packs in a 3310 mAh battery which support fast charging. For connectivity, the phone has 4G VoLTE, 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, GLONASS, MIMO, and USB Type C port. The phone also has Dolby Atmos and Dolby AC-4 support, which provides enhanced surround sound experience.
Additionally, the phone also has IPX5/IPX8/IP6X dust and water resistance protection certification.

Pricing and Availability

Sharp Aquos R2 comes in 5 colors – Premium Black, Platinum White, Aquamarine, Coral Pink and Rose Red. The availability and pricing of the phone are not yet known.
