Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium is the first smartphone in the world to have a display with resolution that not even half of the televisions would have got already. 4K resolution, i.e. 3840 x 2160 pixels resolution is what you get on this premium smartphone, though one wouldn’t have wanted so much already, knowing the fact that it would put a heavy demand on the processor and the battery.
While the pixel lovers might have drooled over the fact that the display has a pixel density of over 800 PPI, the device actually plays most of the content in Full HD resolution, except when you force it to play with a 4K video loaded onto it.
The reason why one would want to have less resolution displays, is the battery drain. It isn’t just the battery drain, but the heavy load on processor that is made a reason. But, Sony has its own reasons to state, on why the content is mostly on 1080p.
Reason 1 – Longer battery life
To optimize performance, power consumption and battery stamina, so that one can get longer usage, for up to two days.
Though on the other side, content from video streaming services like Netflix and Youtube is streamed in 4K, even if it is not available in that resolution. That is done by Sony’s own upscaling feature.
Reason 2 – Third-party apps not available in 4K
There’s a few reasons – first up, after extensive user research and testing we found that rendering entertainment content in 4K, but still being able to access and use all the other great Sony smartphone features as normal without compromising on battery life, was an absolute priority for users.
Secondly, many third-party apps are not designed or capable of running at 4K resolution (yet), but as Xperia Z5 Premium’s display hardware has a 3840×2160 resolution (4K SID standard) with 806ppi, we feel we’ve created a future-proof device for the imaginations, developers and apps of the future.
Screenshots taken in Sony Xperia Z5 Premium come out only in 1080p resolution, and the device currently doesn’t support screenshot taking and rendering in 4K resolution.
When you ask whether there was a real need for a 4K display on a smartphone, Sony has an answer even for that.
Why does this matter? We know from our research that brightness and colour is linked with memory in the human mind. The more vivid the memory, the brighter we remember it, and as engineers we always try to create on-screen experiences that mirror the way we experience the real world.
Recently, Sony also changed its waterproof policy, suggesting users not to take the Sony waterproof phones into swimming pools, as that won’t be covered in warranty.
