Lenovo & Xiaomi pushed out of top five smartphone brands list for Q1 2016

It has not been a great start to the year 2016 for Lenovo and Xiaomi which were positioned in the top five smartphone brands in terms of sales last year with Lenovo being in the 4th position and Xiaomi in 5th position which have been replaced by Oppo and Vivo respectively from the list of top five smartphone in Q1 2016 based on Global smartphone sales figures.

Oppo has managed 18.5 million shipments in Q1 2016 with an impressive YoY growth of 153.2% racing ahead to the 4th position with a market share of 5.5%. On the other hand another Chinese manufacturer, Vivo has recorded 14.2 million shipments with 123.8% YoY growth positioning it in the 5th position in Global market.

With Lenovo and Xiaomi not having the level of Offline presence in terms of smartphones being sold in Retail markets when compared to Oppo and Vivo which have made considerable in roads into the Indian market recently by setting up manufacturing facilities and also improving their retail presence in the Offline market. With the smartphone market in China getting saturated, India is the new location which is being targeted by companies for future growth and Vivo and Oppo have targeted the right market.

Third place has been taken by Huawei with 27.5 million shipments with YoY increase of 58.4% having 8.2% market share. The top two positions are captured by the biggies, Samsung holding on to the 1st position with 81.9 million shipments and having a market share of 24.5%. Apple is in the 2nd position with 51.2 million shipments which is a decline from last year’s 61.2 million shipments ringing alarm bells for the company. The shipments decline also saw the decline in market share which is now 15.3% from last years 18.3%.

Samsung has got a much needed boost with the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge doing well in the market but Apple has seen a decline in sales mainly due to the high pricing of the iPhone SE. And with Oppo and Vivo mainly targeting the budget segment along with their impressive offline presence they are making their position stronger in the market.
