Qualcomm announced Quick Charge 3.0 said to be 4x faster than conventional charging

Qualcomm announces Quick Charge 3.0 along with the announcement of two new Chips Snapdragon 617 and Snapdragon 417, both of which are equipped with this feature. The Quick Charge 3.0 is said to be the next generation of fast charging technology, that will allow manufacturers to enable 4X faster charging in devices compared to conventional charging.

The Quick Charge 3.0 is said to be 38% more efficient compared to its predecessor the Quick Charge 2.0 and twice as fast as Quick Charge 1.0. The new update is said to improve charging up to 27% and also reduces power dissipation by 45% compared to its predecessor. The Quick Charge 3.0 is also said to be backward compatible with Quick Charge 2.0 and Quick Charge 1.0 devices supporting a variety of connectors. You can get up to 80% charge in 35 minutes with the new updated Quick Charge 3.0.

The Quick Charge 3.0 is capable of being used with USB Type-A, USB micro and USB Type-C or other proprietary connectors. Along with these, the other accessories supporting Quick Charge 3.0 are Next-generation chargers, wall chargers, battery packs, car chargers, power controllers etc.

Qualcomm said,

“additional improvements offered by Quick Charge 3.0 include enhanced flexibility over Quick Charge 2.0, notably in terms of charging options. While Quick Charge 2.0 offers four charging voltages at 5V, 9V, 12V and 20V, Quick Charge 3.0 provides flexibility with 200mV increments from 3.6V to 20V. This allows the phone to request just enough voltage to reach the desired charge current, resulting in minimized losses, increased efficiency, and improved thermal performance”

According to the company the Quick Charge 3.0 uses Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV) which is an Algorithm allowing portable devices to determine what power level to request at any point in time, this will improve optimum power transfer while maximizing efficiency. It comes with wider voltage options which lets the device to dynamically adjust to the ideal voltage level supported by the specific device.

Let’s look at the Snapdragon Processors which will be getting the new updated Quick Charge 3.0 – Snapdragon 820, 620, 618,617 and 430. If you were wondering if the devices already launched will be getting this update, you are in bad luck as devices set for 2016 launch will be receiving this feature. The Quick Charge 3.0 AC adapters will be supporting version 1.0 and 2.0 running devices at their full speeds.
