Xiaomi Mi 8 with 6.21-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, Snapdragon 845, 3D Face Unlock launched

On its 8th Anniversary, Xiaomi has unvieled its latest flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 8, today, in China. The company has skipped the Mi 7 and instead went directly to the Mi 8, as it’s the 8th anniversary of the company, since its launch in April 2010, and also 8 is considered as a lucky number in Chinese tradition. The flagship from Xiaomi features a notch on the front, which houses the camera and IR sensors for 3D facial mapping.

Display

The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution, which is 2248×1080 pixels. It uses a Samsung made panel, that has an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a 88.5% screen-to-body ratio. The reason behind the weird aspect ratio is the new notch on the top. Xiaomi has finally embraced the notch phenomenon and has included a notch that resembles the iPhone X’s. The HDR10 ready display has a contrast ratio of 60000:1, a maximum brightness of 600 nits and supports DCi-P3 color gamut.

Processor, RAM & Storage

Like every other flagship smartphone these days, the Xiaomi Mi 8 too is powered by the beefy Snapdragon 845 chipset with Adreno 630 GPU. The phone comes with 6 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64 GB, 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage, to choose from. The phone runs on MIUI 9 based Android 8.1 Oreo, which can be upgraded to MIUI 10 further down the line.

Cameras

The Mi 8 comes with dual 12 MP cameras on the rear, of which the main camera uses a Sony IMX363 sensor, while the secondary camera uses a Samsung made S5K3M3 sensor. The 1/2.6 inch Sony sensor has a 1.4um pixel size and the Samsung sensor has a 1.0um pixel size. The primary camera has a 26mm wide angle lens which has an aperture of f/1.8 and the secondary camera is a telephoto unit which offers the 2X zoom and has an aperture of f/2.4. The rear camera offers 4-axis OIS along with 4K video recording. There’ a dual-tone Dual-LED flash.

To the front, Xiaomi offers a 20 MP selfie camera with 1.84um pixel size and real-time AI portraits. The Mi 8’s cameras have been rated 99 points overall, by DxOMark. The cameras also offer AI features with over 200 scenes to recognize from.

Face ID
The new Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with facial recognition technology. Unlike other android smartphones, which generally take advantage of just the front-facing camera for unlocking, Xiaomi has decided to do it the Apple way, instead. The Mi 8 comes with an Infrared Light and an Infrared lens that together work to help the phone recognize the face even in dark environments. The new Face ID comes with 4096 facial recognition points for accurate 3D face mapping and unlocking. Those 4096 facial points are also used for Animojis, which can capture up to 52 facial muscle movements to imitate and create different animated expressions based on users actions.

Battery & Radios
The keep the phone running, the Mi 8 packs in a 3400 mAh battery that can be quickly topped up at Quick Charge 4+ speeds. The Mi 8 is claimed to be the first smartphone to offer a Dual band L1+L5 GPS radio that offers precise location. Usually phones are equipped L1 frequency, while the L5 is generally used in Aeronautical industry.
As for the connectivity, the phone supports Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual band with 2×2 MU-MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Dual L1+L5 GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou.

Apart from these, the Mi 8 comes with rear mounted fingerprint scanner, for added security and safety. The phone has a curved drop arc design glass back with 7 series aluminum frame on the sides. The Mi 8 has a USB Type C port and also brings back the headphone jack, that was omitted in its predecessor, the Xiaomi Mi 6.

Pricing and Availability of Xiaomi Mi 8

The Xiaomi Mi 8 will come in Black, Blue, White and Rose Gold colors. The phone is priced at CNY 2699 (USD 421/ INR 28424) for the 6 GB RAM / 64 GB storage variant, CNY 2,999 (USD 468/ INR 31583) for the 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB internal storage, while the 6 GB RAM/ 256 GB storage variant would set you back at CNY 3,299 (USD 514/ INR 34743). The Mi 8 will be available in China starting from June 5.

Additionally, Xiaomi has launched a special variant of the Mi 8, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition keeps everything best offered in the Mi 8, but comes with a few extra tricks up its sleeve. The Explorer edition comes only in single RAM and storage configuration, which is a whopping 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The battery takes a hit, with just a 3000 mAh unit underneath, but it has the Quick Charge 4+ support. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition too comes with the Face ID as the standard Mi 8, but to add to its coolness factor, the phone also includes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, similar to the one found on the Vivo X21. The Explorer edition comes with a transparent see through back glass, revealing the device’s internals.

Pricing and Availability of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is priced at CNY 3,699 (USD 576/INR 38903) and will go sale starting from July.
