Reliance Jio and Google to partner and launch 4G handset in India later this year

Reliance Jio; a name that has created quite a sensation India with it’s cheapest 4G service is now again back in the news as we hear that Reliance Jio and Google might launch the most affordable 4G smartphone in India later this year. This so-called affordable 4G device will only work with Jio with all Jio apps and services pre-installed.

According to a report by The Hindu, both Reliance Jio and Google have partnered and are working together in launching to launch a 4G smartphone before 2017. This smartphone might be a second innings for Google with the Android One project with Micromax, Lava, Karbonn, Spice that was shelved long ago due to various factors, and that’s a discussion for some other day.

However, the partnership between Reliance Jio and Google might give enough boost to Google, given that Reliance Jio is known for trendsetting pricing strategies that will help Google catch the momentum. To remind you Sundar Pichai has already mentioned that there is a strong need for cheaper smartphones in India and should be priced well under $30 (Rs. 2035) with 4G support, so it only makes sense Google has joined hands with Reliance Jio. Currently no other details like specifications, pricing are known at the moment, so we will have to wait for some more time to know more.

Sanchit Gogia, CEO at Greyhound Research speaking with the publication said

Such a smartphone will help Jio increase data adoption- helping it render movies and music over its network. It will also improve the overall quality of service delivered on the Jio network.
