ASUS ZenFone Max with Snapdragon 615 FAQ, Pros & Cons

ASUS had two excellent phones in the low mid-range category in 2015, the ZenFone Max, and the ZenFone 2 Laser. This year, we see an upgrade to the ZenFone Max, which had a 5000 mAh battery and it still remains the same. There are changes with the internal specs, and these are some important changes worth noting.

We are making this as an FAQ, so that the most basic but important questions are answered and you get to know what is good or bad about the phone. We have used the phone for over a week to compile to this FAQ based on the usage.

What are the main specifications of the ZenFone Max?

The device comes with a 5.5-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution, Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor along with 2GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, and a camera combination of 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The most interesting part is the inclusion of a 5000 mAh battery, which keeps it one of the best battery smartphones in its price range.

Are there any variants of the device?

The ZenFone Max series, now to be precise, has three variants – the first one that was already in the market, and the other two having Qualcomm Snapdragdon 615, and this particular one has 2GB and 3GB RAM variants and both of them having 32GB of internal storage.

While the 2GB RAM is launched at Rs. 9999, the 3GB RAM variant is going to be sold at Rs. 12999. The former is going to be exclusive to Flipkart, while the latter will be available at all major stores – Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and even offline retail stores.

Does the big 5000 mAh battery on the phone support fast charging?

No, sadly there is no fast charging support seen on the phone and thus, it takes quite a long time to charge the phone fully from an empty charge status. But the company claims that the phone can still charge faster when a fast charger is used, which is though, not included in the box package.

What is the internal storage available to the user in the ZenFone Max?

The storage provided in the device is 32GB, in which about 22GB is available to the user and 10.1GB is used by the OS and apps that are pre-installed.

How much would be the free RAM available when the phone is freshly booted?

About 1.2GB of free RAM is available to the user when the phone is freshly booted.

What is the OS version running in the phone?

The ZenFone Max runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. There is still the same ZenUI that you are looking at here but the newer OS version of Android means you get to see some changes in the core OS level.

What are the pre-installed apps included in the ZenFone Max?

The pre-installed apps included are Clean Master, Amazon Kindle, Puffin, ASUS Mobile Manager, AudioWizard, Auto-start Manager, Do it Later, PhotoCollage, Power Saver, Share Link, Themes, WebStorage, ZenCircle, ZenTalk, and Mini Movie along with the Google apps.

Can I delete the pre-installed apps on the phone?

Only a few of the pre-installed apps can be deleted or uninstalled by the user, and these are the third-party apps. Otherwise, the ones that are from ASUS can be just disabled.

What are the camera features of the ZenFone Max?

The phone has a 13-megapixel rear camera that is assisted by Dual LED flash as well as Laser autofocus. The camera can capture 1080p videos and thanks to the PixelMaster technology, there are several modes including Night Mode, Low Light Mode, Depth of Field, Effects, GIF Animation, rear camera selfie, HDR, Manual mode, Time Rewind mode, Smart Remove, Miniature, Panorama, Slow motion, and Time-lapse.

Does the ZenFone Max come with USB reverse charging feature?

Yes, with that feature, one can charge their other phone if running out of battery and the power source can be the ZenFone Max as it has the feature of sending power to the other devices around when connected with the USB cord.

What are the sensors included in the phone and is there a fingerprint sensor provided?

The sensors available in the phone Accelerometer, eCompass, Proximity Sensor, Hall Sensor, and the Ambient Light Sensor. No, there is no fingerprint sensor available.

Does the ZenFone Max support USB OTG connectivity?

Yes, there is support for the OTG connectivity in the Max, so if you wanted to quickly shift any files from and to a USB drive, this is the easiest option.

What are the 4G LTE bands supported by the smartphone?

The ZenFone Max supports 4G LTE (FDD) – Band B1, B3, B5, LTE (TD) – 38 / 39 / 40 / 41 (2555 – 2655).
