Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, the 5.5-inch phablet comes with off-screen navigation buttons. This is a good way to give the users a wide screen area to use and not waste any space for navigation button area. But usually, the fixed navigation buttons that are not a software part don’t allow for any change in action.
The Redmi Note 3, thanks to the MIUI, has a lot of options available to the user. Each of the buttons has a particular function set to it, but that can be changed, and even the action for longer press can be changed. Read below to find out how to do that.
Change function of Navigation buttons
Go to Settings > Additional settings > Buttons, and here you will have the option to change the function of only the Recents button, i.e. the extreme left button.
You can have one of the options – Recent apps tray, or the Menu.
Change function of Navigation button long press
While pressing the navigation button, you can get another function done. And you can have a long press function set for all the three navigation buttons. Just below the option for Recents key navigation button function, you will see the “Long Press Navigation Buttons” section where you can change it for the three buttons.
- Recents key long press function: You can choose between Show recent apps tray, launch Google now, Close current app, Show menu, and None.
- Home key long press function: Here, the choices are Show recent apps tray, launch Google Now, Close current app, and None.
- Back key long press function: On pressing the back key for long, you can have between Show recent apps tray, launch Google Now, Close current app, and None.
If you intelligently try to set things up for a normal press and a long press, you are already a power user, otherwise, use one of the above settings for a better use.
How long to press for the “long press” action to happen?
For the long press action to happen, you can very well set a time because you don’t want that function to happen when you had normally pressed the button for certain function.
Under the same Button settings, you can go to “Define long press time” and select one of the four options based on when you want the long press action to be activated – 0.5 seconds, 1 second, 1.5 seconds, and 2 seconds.
Tweak Navigation button light settings
You can toggle between lighting up the navigation buttons or to have them turned off all the time. Also, if you tap on any of the navigation buttons, it is turned on for a particular amount of time. Under the same buttons settings, you will see an option of “Button light duration” and that can be from 1 second to Always on.
