How to Manually flash Android Marshmallow on Nexus 5, 6, 7 and 9

Google has finally released the Android Marshmallow factory images for most of the Nexus devices, this includes Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013) and Nexus 9. Google will soon roll out these updates but it may take as long as 2 weeks to reach you via OTA and if you are a desperate guy who wants to use Marshmallow right away then the best way to do so is to flash it!

Those who are familiar with ROMs and have flashed them in the past know that it is not a difficult job but if you are a novice then it may be a bit arduous job for you. Also keep in mind that this will erase all the data from your device but that shouldn’t be a big problem if you really want to get Android 6.0 on your device.

Stuff you need:

Android Marshmallow

  • Android Marshmallow Factory Image
  • ADB/Fastboot
  • ADB Drivers

Tutorial:

  • Before starting, make sure you have downloaded all the required files. Download Android Marshmallow factory images for Nexus
  • Make a folder on desktop and name it ‘marshmallow’. Put all the downloaded files there.
  • Now install ADB on your PC by following the instructions on the screen also make sure that you install them system wide.
  • You don’t need to install the drivers from the ADB installer itself as you will install it later.
  • After installing ADB, install the drivers.
  • Go to the ‘marshmallow’ folder on your desktop and press Shift + Right Click and choose the Open command prompt option. This will open the command prompt in the Marshmallow folder.
  • Only for Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 users: You need to Enable OEM Lock, to do so, go to Settings> About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times. This will enable the developer mode option. Now head to Settings> Developer Mode and tap the Enable OEM unlock option.
  • Now you need to reboot your device in bootloader mode, it can be attained by the following way:
    Nexus 5: Volume Up + Volume Down for few seconds then press Power Button
    Nexus 6: Volume Down for few seconds then press the Power Button
    Nexus 7 (2013): Volume Down for few seconds then press Power Button
    Nexus 9: Volume Down for few seconds and then press the Power Button
  • Now check whether you phone is detected by PC or not, to do so, type the following command:
    fastboot devices
    Note: Mac users need to add “./” before every command, this is how it should be:
    ./fastboot devices
  • Once the PC has detected your device, proceed ahead but if it doesn’t then you need to reinstall the drivers.
  • Type the following command on your PC
    fastboot oem unlock

    Press Volume Up button on your phone to confirm it. This will unlock the bootloader of your Nexus device.

    The device should automatically reboot not but if it doesn’t then you should reboot it manually.

  • Once it boots up, switch it off and then go in recovery mode.
  • Type the following command in the command prompt window
    flash-all.bat
    Mac Users need to type
    ./flash-all.bat
  • The process will start, you need to sit back and relax
  • Once it is installed, the device will automatically reboot. (The process may take up to 20 minutes)

There you go! Enjoy the new Android Marshmallow on your device! If something goes wrong, like the device is stuck on the logo screen then repeat the steps mentioned above and it should possibly get you out of it!
