Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus

Samsung Galaxy S9+ vs. Galaxy S9: How do the two phones differ?

Similar to last year, Samsung announced two new phones at today’s Unpacked event on the first day of MWC. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ come with very similar specifications but stand out on a few points that become a key differentiating factor for someone looking to buy a new phone. Both the devices are excellent performers and carry the same hardware for the most part except a few differences as in the case of the camera.

The S9 and the S9+ both come with the exact same design language and they both look pretty similar form the front except size. The S9 and the S9+ both come with the QHD+ Infinity displays but the S9 has a slightly smaller display at 5.8-inch while the S9+ comes with a 6.2-inch display and this is perhaps the most significant difference between the two devices. The difference in screen sizes translates to a similar difference in the overall size of the phone and we can see that the S9+ is significantly bigger than the Samsung Galaxy S9.

Both the devices come with the same processor, storage specification, IP Rating and even the color variants. The next significant change in both the devices is in the RAM size. The S9 comes with 4GB of RAM while the S9+ comes with 6GB RAM which is a straight increase in 50%. We’ve seen a similar trend in the previous year’s Samsung Galaxy S8 and the S8+ wherein the S8 only came with the 4GB RAM option and the S8+ later got a new variant with 6GB RAM.

While the front camera is the exact same on both the devices, the rear camera sees a different approach. Samsung seems to have gone the Apple way and we see the Dual camera setup only on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ while the Samsung Galaxy S9 gets s single lens setup. The Single lens on the Samsung Galaxy S9 is a 12MP sensor with dual aperture shifting which allows changing of the aperture by toggling between F/1.5 for low lighting to F/2.4 for very well-lit conditions. The Samsung Galaxy S9+, on the other hand, comes with a dual lens setup one of which is the same dual aperture lens seen on the S9 and the other secondary lens is a 12MP lens with an aperture of F/2.4.

Both the devices come with support for Dual-Sim and have Bluetooth 5.0 allowing for multi-device streaming. We also see stereo speakers in this generation of flagship from the company and the next major differentiating factor in the devices is the battery. While the Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with a 3000mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ comes with a 3500mAh battery that does affect the overall battery life on a single charge.
