LeEco India announces “Make in India” plans, manufacturing facility in Greater Noida

Announcing its plans for the Make in India campaign, LeEco, the electronics brand from China that entered the Indian market not more than a year ago, has announced that it has crossed 1 million sales of its smartphones in the span of just 8 months. As for the Make in India plans, the company is setting up a smartphone manufacturing facility in Greater Noida, India.

LeEco has announced an investment of 5 million USD and a further 2 million USD has been earmarked for the automation process. The collaboration for the local manufacturing has been done with Compal Electronics, which is responsible for setting up of the plant in Noida.

Commenting on this, The Hon’ble Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology and Law & Justice, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad said “With the objective of making India the manufacturing hub for electronics, the Indian Government has undertaken various initiatives to create a conducive businesses environment. As the market size for electronics is expected to grow to US$400 billion by 2020, it is imperative to promote indigenous manufacturing. LeEco is a name of global reputation and it is heartening to see it align with “Make in India” just after entering India eight months earlier. We laud their efforts of training local talents and building a center of R&D excellence in the country.”

According to Tin Mok, VP of Le Holdings and CEO of LeEco Asia Pacific, the company has a strong R&D team already in India and they plan to add over 1000 engineers by next year, who will work in designing and developing products.

The facility is spread over an area of 200000 sq. feet and the production capacity is of about 60000 units per month. LeEco plans to ramp up the production and will be able to produce up to 200000 phones every month by the end of 2016.
