The Moto Z is a flagship model while the Moto Z Play lies somewhat in the upper mid-range category. The former is one of the slimmest smartphones in its genre and comes with top of the line hardware. Both the handsets sport 5.5-inch AMOLED displays. The Moto Z has a Quad HD (2560 x 1440) panel in comparison to the Full HD (1080 x 1920) of the Moto Z Play. While the former is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, Motorola hasn’t disclosed the presence of any display protection in the latter.

Coming to internals, the Moto Z is powered by the mighty Snapdragon 820 SoC. Surprisingly, the Indian variant of the smartphone features a lower clocked variant of the processor. This is similar to the Xiaomi Mi 5 and runs at a maximum clock speed of 1.8 GHz instead of the standard 2.15 GHz. On the other hand, the Moto Z Play sports a rather mediocre Snapdragon 625 chipset. This has eight Cortex A53 cores running up to 2.0 GHz frequency along with Adreno 506 GPU.

There is 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM combined with 64 GB internal memory in the Moto Z. The Moto Z Play comes with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB inbuilt storage. Both the devices support micro SD cards through their hybrid SIM trays. Each of the new smartphones runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and will get updated to Android 7.0 Nougat soon.

Speaking of the camera, the Moto Z has a 13 MP primary shooter with a large f/1.8 aperture. The Moto Z Play comes with a 16 MP main camera with a smaller f/2.0 aperture size. This suggests that the Moto Z sports much better low light shooting capability than it’s sibling. Other things are pretty similar in both the devices. Each of them features Laser Auto Focus along with PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) and identical 5 MP front cameras. 4K recording is available in both the smartphones along with 1080p videos at 60 fps and slow motion 720p footages at 120fps. The Moto Z and Moto Z Play sports an innovative CCT (Colour Correlated Temperature) dual LED flash at the back along with a single LED one in the front.

The battery of the Moto Z is a 2600mAh one while a 3510mAh cell juices up the Moto Z Play. This can further be increased by Moto Mods. Fingerprint sensor is integrated with the home buttons in each of the handsets. They even come with a water repellent coating for protection against accidental water splashes.

Connectivity wise, both the latest phones support dual Nano SIM cards, 4G LTE along with VoLTE, dual band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), Bluetooth, GPS, USB-C etc. The Moto Z Play also has a 3.5 mm audio jack, which the Moto Z lacks. Motorola has included an USB Type-C to 3.5 mm connector with the latter. The innovative Moto Mods will be available along with the Moto Z series. They will add some additional functionalities to the handsets like projector, power bank, powerful speakers and even a camera with zoom lens. The Moto Mods are attached to the back of the Moto Z and Moto Z Play with the help of strong magnets.
