Nokia OZO is a beautiful VR camera with eight sensors, for Film makers

Nokia has just come out with a new camera called OZO, which is targeted at Film makers who are or want to get into Virtual Reality Film making. There were earlier devices introduce by GoPro and Samsung mainly targeting the VR segment in the recent past and Nokia is the latest entry.

The OZO by Nokia is a spherical shaped camera which comes with eight shutter sensors and integrated eight microphones also to capture sound as well as the image. The cameras by Samsung and GoPro has flattened circles to accommodate the camera lenses but here it is a complete circle which has eight shutters all over it along with microphones to help capture 360-degree videos.

“We’re thrilled to introduce OZO to the content creation world, and to define a completely new category of virtual reality capture and playback solutions,” said Ramzi Haidamus, president of Nokia Technologies. “OZO aims to advance the next wave of innovation in VR by putting powerful tools in the hands of professionals who will create amazing experiences for people around the world. We expect that virtual reality experiences will soon radically enhance the way people communicate and connect to stories, entertainment, world events and each other. With OZO, we plan to be at the heart of this new world.”

The Nokia OZO comes with some great features to help film makers view their work instantly and see that what they planned has come out perfectly. Usually in other VR cameras the file sizes are huge and it takes time to stitch the videos together and to see them. In case of the Nokia OZO it gives a low resolution version of the footage in just few minutes which will help film makers check out their work instantly and record again if any correction is needed in any aspect of the recording.

And the high-resolution version of the video can be viewed at the same time or in real time as it is being recorded through a VR headset. If you are having Occlusal Rift HUD then directors can post the high resolution versions of the video there for viewing.

The Nokia OZO will be shipped from the fourth quarter of 2015 and the exact specifications of the camera lens or the microphones have not been revealed by Nokia. We have to wait for the official announcement for the details. One Studio, Jaunt Inc., which has its own traditional VR camera has said that it will support and use OZO.
