ChatGPT ‘Something went wrong’ or network error: Causes and fixes

ChatGPT’s “Something went wrong” message does not point to one specific fault. It can appear during a temporary OpenAI service problem, when a browser extension blocks part of the page, or when a VPN, proxy, secure DNS service or unstable connection interrupts the request. A related “Network error” usually means the browser or app could not maintain a reliable connection to OpenAI’s servers.

The fastest fix is to test one variable at a time. The sequence below starts with steps that are safe and quick, then narrows the problem to ChatGPT, your browser, your network or a particular conversation.

What the common ChatGPT errors usually mean

Error or symptom Likely area to check First action
“Something went wrong” Temporary service or local browser problem Retry once, then check OpenAI Status
“A network error occurred” Unstable connection, VPN, proxy or security filter Disable the network layer temporarily or switch networks
WebSocket connection error A firewall or network tool interrupted the live connection Try another network and turn off VPN/proxy tools
“There was an error generating a response” A single response failed Select Retry or Regenerate
Endless “Thinking” or “Generating” Long conversation, stalled request or browser issue Stop, regenerate, then try a new chat
Blank or frozen page Cached site data or an extension conflict Hard-refresh and test an incognito window

1. Retry once, but do not keep resending

Wait 30–60 seconds to see whether the answer completes. If it remains stuck, select Stop generating and then Regenerate or Retry. For a one-off response failure, this may be all that is needed.

Avoid repeatedly pressing the button or submitting the same prompt in several tabs. That makes it harder to tell whether the original request is still running and can create duplicate chats. If the same conversation continues to fail, copy the prompt and start a new chat. Very long conversations with many turns can become slower or more difficult to load.

2. Check whether ChatGPT is having an outage

Open OpenAI Status before changing browser or network settings. Look for an active incident affecting ChatGPT, login, conversations or file processing. If OpenAI reports a disruption, local troubleshooting will not repair the service; wait for the incident to be resolved and try again.

If the status page reports normal operation while the error affects only you, continue with the tests below.

3. Refresh ChatGPT correctly

Start with a normal page refresh. If the interface stays blank or frozen, perform a hard refresh using Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac. Desktop-app users can close and reopen the app.

Next, sign out of ChatGPT and sign back in. Before doing this, copy any unsent prompt or text you do not want to lose. A fresh session can repair expired authentication data without deleting your saved conversations.

4. Use an incognito window to isolate browser problems

Open ChatGPT in an incognito or private window and sign in. If ChatGPT works there, the normal browser profile is the likely cause. Common culprits include ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, antivirus browser add-ons and tools that modify webpage content.

Disable extensions temporarily, beginning with security and content-blocking tools, then reload ChatGPT. Do not remove every extension permanently at once. Re-enable them one by one after identifying the conflict.

If incognito mode does not help, try a different updated browser or another device. This separates an account-wide problem from a problem limited to one browser installation.

5. Clear ChatGPT site data and cookies

Outdated or corrupted site data can cause blank pages, login loops and generic errors. Clear cookies and site data for ChatGPT, then sign in again. Clearing only the general browser cache may not remove the affected authentication or site-storage entry.

This step signs you out but does not delete chats stored in your account. Make sure you know the original sign-in method—password, Google, Microsoft, Apple or workplace SSO—before clearing login data.

6. Test the network without a VPN, proxy or secure DNS

OpenAI specifically recommends disabling VPNs and proxy connections when diagnosing network and WebSocket errors. Security products sometimes include features named Web Protect, Private Relay, HTTPS inspection, safe browsing or secure DNS; these can also filter a connection.

Temporarily turn off these tools and reload ChatGPT. If that is not possible, switch from office or public Wi-Fi to a trusted home network or mobile hotspot. Conversely, if mobile data is weak, test stable Wi-Fi. The purpose is to compare two genuinely different network paths.

On a company, college or managed network, ask the IT administrator whether web filtering, firewall inspection or domain blocking affects ChatGPT. OpenAI publishes a current list of domains that organisations may need to allow.

7. Fix ChatGPT mobile-app errors

Update the official ChatGPT app and your phone’s operating system, then restart the device. Confirm that the date and time are set automatically and that the connection is stable. OpenAI’s DeviceCheckError guidance says an incorrect date, outdated software or a device-integrity problem can prevent the app from generating a required device token.

On Android, also update the Google Play Store. OpenAI notes that an outdated Play Store version can trigger a “Something went wrong” login error. If the app continues to fail, test ChatGPT in the phone’s browser; this helps establish whether the issue belongs to the app or the account/network.

When should you contact OpenAI Support?

Contact Support when the error persists across multiple browsers or devices and at least two networks, with no active incident on the status page. Open the support chat at help.openai.com.

Include the exact error message, date and time with time zone, device and browser or app version, the model used, and the conversation URL or ID when available. OpenAI may ask advanced web users for a HAR file and browser-console errors. HAR files can contain sensitive session and request information, so follow Support’s instructions and sanitise the file before sharing it.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  1. Wait briefly, stop the response and retry once.
  2. Check OpenAI Status.
  3. Start a new chat if only one long conversation fails.
  4. Hard-refresh, restart the app, or sign out and back in.
  5. Test an incognito window with extensions disabled.
  6. Clear ChatGPT site data and cookies.
  7. Disable VPN, proxy, secure DNS and security filters temporarily.
  8. Try another browser, device and trusted network.
  9. Update the mobile app, operating system and Android Play Store.
  10. Contact Support with timestamps and reproducible details if the problem persists.

Most “Something went wrong” and network errors are temporary or can be isolated through these comparisons. The useful question is not simply whether the internet works, but whether ChatGPT works in a clean browser, on another network and in a new conversation. Those tests reveal where the failure is occurring without risking your saved chat history.
