Things you need to make sure before moving to a new phone

These days everyone is purchasing a new phone very frequently and when you purchase a new phone, you need to make sure that your old phone is empty of all your data and you successfully have all that data in your new phone. There are a lot of items that you might need to transfer, and you might actually forget one or two of these. So today, let me tell you all the things you need to make sure before you move to a new phone completely.

Recently, I’ve been covering most of these things as individual articles, but I thought it would be good to have all of them in one place here for you to understand what all needs to be moved to the new phone. In cases where I’ve already written a detailed tutorial on how to do something, I’ll link you to that tutorial so you can follow it from there. Let’s get started with the list.

Contacts

If you’re already on the Cloud bandwagon like I am, you might not need to backup your contacts, but if you’re still not on the bandwagon, you will want to backup your contacts on your old device and move them to the new device or sync them with your Google Account, because that’s probably the best way to do it in my opinion. I have covered a guide on how you can do that already so you might want to go through that to get a better understanding of that.

Call Logs

Call Logs are something that not everyone would want to transfer to their new phone, but if you want to keep a track of your old calls on your new phone as well, you might want to move them to your new phone as well. I have already covered in an article how to move your call logs from your old phone to the new, and you can easily refer to that article. It makes use of an application from the Play Store to transfer the call logs. It is a short and simple process.

Messages

Although text messages are kind of a thing of the past in India, but still a lot of brands communicate with you via text messages only and it might be a good idea to move your messages to your new phone. I wrote a guide for this a few months ago and you can follow that for a detailed step-by-step tutorial or if you have already transferred your call logs, you can use that same application to transfer text messages as well.

Media (Music/Videos/Documents)

Your personal media might be one of the most important thing that you want to move to your new phone. At least for me, my music and pictures are something that I can’t live without. For doing so, earlier I used to transfer them using Bluetooth, but now, I use an application called ShareIt that allows me to send all my music to my new phone without any problem at all. I have written a guide on how to do that easily already and you should refer to that.

Application Data

The last thing that you might want to move to your new phone is the application data. These days most of the applications and games that you use have a cloud sync feature, but if you’re using an application that doesn’t have a cloud sync feature, you can manually take a backup of the data from the app itself. When I’m moving from one phone to the other, I like to go through the entire list of apps installed on my phone and see which ones are not synced with the cloud. If you’re using a note taking app that came from your manufacturer, it might not be synced and you should take a backup of that somehow and move it to your new phone. You might have to manually enter all the notes again in the new phone, but this time, make sure you use a cloud note taking app like Google Keep or Evernote.

Finally on Old Phone

Finally on your old phone, you have to do a few things before giving it away to anyone, even your family member if you want to to protect your data/accounts. The first and foremost is to remove all the media that you have on the device, including music, movies, pictures, and videos. Next, you might want to do a factory reset for the phone that will remove all the apps that you had installed along with all your contacts, messages, and logged in accounts for different services. If you do a factory reset, the person who will get your phone will have an experience as if the phone is brand new, out of the factory.
