A Google Pay payment pending message usually means the app has sent the request but is still waiting for a final response from the bank or UPI network. The safest move is to check the transaction status and your bank statement before trying again. A second payment can create a duplicate debit if the first one later succeeds.
Quick answer: Open Google Pay, go to See transaction history and select the payment. If it says processing, do not repeat it. Google says merchant payments can remain in process for up to three business days. If the payment fails after money was deducted, check the linked bank account for a reversal.
What the Google Pay status means
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Processing or in progress | The bank has not sent a final result. | Do not pay again. Recheck the same transaction later. |
| Failed | The payment did not complete. | Retry only if your bank account was not debited. If it was debited, wait for reversal. |
| Successful | UPI recorded the transfer as completed. | Ask the recipient or merchant to verify using the UPI reference ID. |
Google Pay payment pending: checks to do now
- Open Google Pay and tap See transaction history.
- Select the payment and note its status, amount, time and UPI transaction ID.
- Open your bank app or statement. Do not rely only on an SMS notification.
- Ask the recipient to check their bank statement, not just their payment app.
- Confirm that Google Pay is updated and your internet connection is stable.
If Google Pay still shows processing, leave the transaction alone until it reaches a final status. Do not enter your UPI PIN merely to receive a refund. A genuine reversal is automatic and never requires a PIN or OTP.
If money was deducted
For a failed merchant payment, Google says the amount should return within three business days. A reversal entry may contain UPI-REV or UPI-RET followed by the transaction ID. RBI’s wider failed-transaction framework says a UPI person-to-person transfer that debited the sender but did not credit the beneficiary should be reversed by T+1 day. For a merchant payment without confirmation, auto-reversal is due within T+5 days. Here, T is the transaction date.

How to report the transaction
- In Google Pay, open See transaction history.
- Select the affected transaction.
- Tap Having issues? and follow the prompts to create a ticket.
- Save the ticket number and the UPI transaction ID.
- If the promised reversal period has passed, contact the bank whose account was debited.
Google Pay also lists a toll-free support number, 1-800-419-0157, on its official grievance page. Use only numbers shown inside the app or on Google’s official help pages; search-result ads and unofficial “support” accounts are a common source of scams.
When should you retry?
Retry only after the first transaction clearly shows failed and your bank account was not debited, or after a deducted amount has been reversed. For an urgent purchase, use another payment method and tell the merchant not to treat a later UPI success as a second sale.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google Pay cancel a pending UPI payment?
There is normally no cancel button for an initiated UPI payment. Wait for the bank and UPI network to mark it successful or failed.
Does a refund require my UPI PIN?
No. You enter a UPI PIN to authorise money going out, not to receive a reversal or refund.
