PhonePe Mobile Number Verification Failed: SIM and SMS Fixes

PhonePe mobile-number verification failure with SIM, SMS and device-binding checks

PhonePe uses mobile-number verification and device binding to connect the app to your identity and eligible UPI accounts. Verification can fail even when calls and mobile data work, because the process may also require an outgoing SMS from the correct SIM.

Most common causes

  • The bank-registered SIM is not selected.
  • The SIM cannot send an outgoing SMS.
  • PhonePe does not have the required phone or SMS permission.
  • The mobile number in PhonePe does not match the number held by the bank.
  • A dual-SIM setting sends the verification from the other number.
  • The telecom or bank verification service is temporarily unavailable.
  • A VPN, security app or aggressive battery control interrupts the process.

1. Confirm the correct SIM

If you are linking a bank account, use the SIM whose number is registered with that bank. On a dual-SIM phone, temporarily make it the default SMS SIM. Keep it active with a stable network signal.

2. Test a normal outgoing SMS

Send a regular text message to a trusted contact. A plan can provide mobile data while lacking outgoing SMS service or main balance. Resolve the telecom issue before trying PhonePe verification again.

3. Review PhonePe permissions

Open the phone’s Settings, select Apps and then PhonePe. Allow the permissions requested for number verification. Permission names differ between Android versions and iPhones, so use the current on-screen prompt rather than enabling unrelated access.

4. Turn off temporary interference

Keep PhonePe in the foreground while it verifies. If a trusted VPN, spam filter, work profile or battery manager is blocking the process, temporarily pause only the relevant restriction and retry. Do not disable device security broadly or install an unknown helper app.

5. Update PhonePe safely

Install updates only through Google Play or the Apple App Store. Restart the phone after the update. Clearing app cache may help a frozen screen, but clearing all data or reinstalling will make you verify the account again.

6. Check for a number mismatch

Your PhonePe login number and the number registered against the bank account must align for ordinary UPI account discovery. If the bank has your old number, update it through the bank’s official process. PhonePe cannot change the bank’s customer records.

7. Wait before repeated retries

Several rapid verification attempts can trigger temporary controls. If the SIM and permissions are correct, wait and try later. Contact PhonePe or your telecom provider when the SMS never leaves the phone.

Account blocked after incorrect OTP attempts

PhonePe’s Trust and Safety page says that three incorrect OTP entries during a new-device login can block the PhonePe account for 24 hours. Do not continue guessing. Wait for the stated period or use official support if you did not initiate the login.

Security warning: never forward the binding SMS

PhonePe has specifically warned about malware that forwards UPI device-binding messages. Do not install APKs or SMS-forwarding apps sent by a courier, bank, hospital or support caller. Never share an OTP, UPI PIN or screen-control access.
